Ingredients and What They Bring to the Dish

This recipe is all about simple, nutritious ingredients that come together to make a complete and tasty meal for your dog.

  • Mackerel fillets – The star of the show! Mackerel is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, which support your dog’s coat, joints, and overall well-being.
  • Quinoa – A great grain alternative that’s full of protein and fiber. It makes a fluffy base for the dish.
  • Water – Used to cook the quinoa and help everything steam together in the oven.
  • Frozen peas and carrots – A classic veggie combo that adds color, texture, and extra nutrients.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

There are just a few important things to keep in mind and some easy swaps if you want to mix things up.

  • Always use boneless fillets. Fish bones can be sharp and dangerous, posing a choking risk or causing internal damage.
  • Be sure to rinse the quinoa thoroughly before cooking. It has a natural coating called saponin that can taste bitter and might irritate your dog’s tummy.
  • You can swap the mackerel for other dog-safe fish like salmon or cod. Here’s a handy guide on fish dogs can eat if you want more options.
  • Instead of quinoa, try white rice, brown rice, barley, or sorghum. Just note that cooking times may vary depending on the grain.
  • Not into peas and carrots? Use green beans or broccoli instead. You can even try a combo!

How to Make Mackerel Dog Food

This recipe bakes up in a single dish, making cleanup a breeze. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Rinse the quinoa with cold water to remove the saponin.
  3. In a casserole dish, add the rinsed quinoa and water. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.
  4. Take it out of the oven and stir in the frozen peas and carrots.
  5. Lay the mackerel fillets on top of the mixture.
  6. Bake uncovered for another 20 minutes, or until the quinoa is cooked and the fish flakes easily.
  7. Flake the fish with a fork and mix everything together.
  8. Let it cool completely before serving it to your pup.

How to Store the Food and How Long It Will Last

Once the food has cooled, transfer it to an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. It’ll stay fresh for up to 4 days.

Need to store it longer? Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers or zip-top bags. They’ll keep well for up to 3 months. Just thaw in the fridge overnight, then warm slightly in the microwave or oven. Be sure it’s not hot, just gently warmed for safe feeding.

Can people eat this food?

Yes! All the ingredients are safe for humans, so if you’re curious, go ahead and taste it. You might want to season your portion with a little salt or herbs. But hey, you might just find yourself sharing dinner with your dog.

How much food to give depends on your dog’s size, activity level, and breed. A good rule of thumb is about 1 cup for every 20 pounds of body weight. That said, it’s always best to check with your vet for guidance tailored to your dog.

When introducing any new food, start with small amounts to make sure your pup tolerates it well and doesn’t have any sensitivities.

The ingredients are generally safe, but puppies have specific nutritional needs that are different from adult dogs. Check with your vet before feeding this to a puppy to ensure they’re getting everything they need for proper growth and development.
