Benefits of Liver for Dogs

Liver is a nutrient powerhouse! It’s packed with protein, essential vitamins like A, B, and D, and minerals such as iron and zinc. These nutrients support healthy skin, coat, and overall immune function. A little liver in your dog’s diet can go a long way in keeping them happy and healthy.

Important Note About Dogs Eating Liver

While liver is incredibly nutritious, moderation is key. Too much liver can lead to Vitamin A toxicity, which isn’t good for your pup. This liver cake should be treated as a special treat, so just stick to one piece per day. Always check with your veterinarian if you’re unsure how much liver your dog should have.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This liver cake is made with just four simple ingredients:

  • Chicken Liver: The star of the show! It’s nutrient-dense and provides that irresistible meaty flavor.
  • Eggs: They help bind the cake together and add a little protein boost.
  • Oat Flour: A gentle, gluten-free option that’s easy to digest.
  • Rolled Oats: These add a bit of texture to the top of the cake, making it extra special.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Swap chicken liver for beef, deer, or duck liver. Just cut it into small pieces before blending with the eggs.
  • Make your own oat flour by blending old-fashioned oats into a fine consistency.
  • Substitute all-purpose flour or a 50-50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for oat flour. Avoid coconut flour as it absorbs too much moisture.

How to Make Liver Cake for Dogs

Making this cake is so simple, even beginner bakers can feel like pros!

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a square baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a blender, combine the chicken liver and eggs. Blend until smooth and pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in the oat flour until well combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle rolled oats on top.
  4. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center. Let it cool completely before cutting it into bite-sized pieces.

Serving Size

Because of the high Vitamin A content, limit your dog to one piece of liver cake per day. Start with small amounts if it’s a new treat for your pup to avoid any adverse reactions. Always consult your vet for personalized guidance.

How to Store the Cake and How Long It Lasts

Storing: Keep the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and it’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days.

Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the cake in a freezer-safe container or bag. It’ll last for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge before serving.

Can people eat this liver cake?

Technically, yes because it’s made with human-grade ingredients, so it’s safe for people to eat. However, before you grab a fork, keep in mind that this cake was designed with canine taste buds in mind. With no added salt, sugar, or seasonings, it won’t taste like your usual baked goods.

It’s savory, dense, and all about that liver flavor, which most humans probably wouldn’t find appealing. So, while it’s perfectly edible, it’s best to leave this treat to the true connoisseurs: your four-legged friends!
