Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s something so fun about baking homemade treats and watching your dog try to figure out what that amazing smell is coming from the kitchen. The tail wags, the hopeful eyes, the happy dance while they wait for a taste – it makes it all worth it. There are so many reasons this recipe will be a favorite.

Easy to Make – The dough comes together in one bowl, rolls out easily, and bakes into perfectly crunchy cookies. Then you simply whip the cream cheese and sandwich them together. Simple steps, big payoff.

Wholesome Ingredients – These cookies are made with ingredients you recognize and trust. No artificial flavors or mystery additives. Just simple, dog-friendly goodness in every bite.

Perfect for a Special Treat – They are great for celebrations, birthdays, gotcha days, or just when you want to spoil your pup a little more than usual.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Cookies

Each ingredient has a purpose in creating cookies that are crunchy, flavorful, and perfectly sandwich-worthy. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Carob powder – Adds a rich, chocolate-like flavor that is safe for dogs.
  • Oat flour – Forms the base of the cookie and is easily digestible by dogs.
  • Unsweetened applesauce – Adds moisture and natural sweetness.
  • Peanut butter – Brings flavor dogs love and adds protein.
  • Egg – Provides structure and helps the cookies hold their shape.
  • Melted coconut oil – Adds healthy fats that support skin and coat health.
  • Low-fat cream cheese – Creates the creamy filling that makes these sandwich cookies extra special.

Equipment Needed

You likely already have everything you need in your kitchen. A mixing bowl, rolling pin, baking sheet, and wire rack are the basics. I used a bone-shaped cookie cutter, but you can absolutely use a paw shape to make them round and even more like classic sandwich cookies. However you shape them, these little cookie sandwiches are almost too cute to handle. Almost.

If you need some cutters, this Bone and Paw Cookie Cutter Set works great.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Here are a few important tips and easy swaps to keep in mind.

  • Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs.
  • You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter as long as it is xylitol-free.
  • You can substitute applesauce with mashed ripe banana.
  • You can make oat flour by blending old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender or food processor until a flour consistency is reached. One cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • You can substitute oat flour with brown rice flour and make it by blending uncooked brown rice.
  • You can substitute oat flour with all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.

Note: Flour substitutes may affect the dough. Start with less and add as needed.

How to Make Carob Sandwich Cookies for Dogs

These carob sandwich cookies for dogs are simple to make and fun to assemble. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the oat flour and carob powder. Stir or whisk to blend.
  3. Add the applesauce, peanut butter, egg, and melted coconut oil. Stir until a dough forms.
  4. Place the dough on parchment paper and roll it out to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  5. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Gather scraps, re-roll, and cut until all dough is used.
  6. Transfer the cutouts to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Move the baked cookies to a wire rack and cool completely.

Make the Filling

  1. Place the softened cream cheese in a bowl.
  2. Use a mixer to whip it until fluffy.
  3. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on the bottom of one cookie.
  4. Place another cookie on top to form a sandwich. Repeat with the remaining cookies.

How to Store the Cookies and How Long They Last

Because of the cream cheese filling, store the cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days at room temperature and up to 1 week refrigerated.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container. They will last for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these cookies?

Yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Give one a try and see if you like it.
