What’s In Hummus?

There are a lot of different ways to make this delicious dip. The first thing we will look at is the individual ingredients in plain hummus and whether they are safe for your dog to eat.

Hummus dip is usually served with carrot sticks and pita bread. Those are safe snacks to give your dog, but what about the dip? Let’s look at what is in hummus.

Can Dogs Eat Chickpeas

Chickpeas are the main ingredient in hummus. Also called garbanzo beans, this is a safe ingredient for dogs. They also contain antioxidants that boost your dog’s immune system.

Read more about dogs and chickpeas before you give your pet too many of them.

Can Dogs Eat Olive Oil

Yes, dogs can safely eat olive oil as well. Be careful with different types of oil, such as vegetable or peanut oil. Some dogs are sensitive to them.

Can Dogs Have Tahini

Another ingredient in hummus is tahini, which is made with sesame seeds. Yes, dogs can safely eat tahini. If you want to learn how to safely give your dog tahini, check out this guide to dogs and tahini.

Can Dogs Have Lemon Juice

This is a harmful ingredient to dogs. Lemon juice contains citric acid, which can give your dog stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea. This all depends on quantity. The tiny amount of lemon juice in hummus might not harm your dog, but sensitive dogs might react.

Can Dogs Eat Garlic

No, do not let your dog eat garlic of any kind. It can damage your dog’s red blood cells and cause hemolytic anemia and internal organ damage. If you see garlic as an ingredient in the hummus, do not let your dog eat it.

Can Dogs Have Hummus

Before you give your dog hummus, read this guide.

Hummus is not the best thing to give to your canine friend. Yes, dogs can have hummus, but only in very small amounts if it doesn’t contain any garlic. Chickpeas and tahini are safe for dogs to eat in moderation.

You should also be careful with how much salt you allow your dog to eat. Dogs are very sensitive to sodium poisoning.

Can Puppies Eat Hummus

No, puppies should not eat hummus. Their little digestive systems are still developing and sensitive to harmful or inflammatory ingredients like lemon juice and salt. They should only eat puppy food and whole, safe foods like plain uncooked chicken.

Is Hummus Bad For Dogs

Too much hummus can make your furry friend feel sick. It is very important to make sure they only eat a tiny bit at a time. The safest option is to keep it away from them entirely.

The most dangerous thing about hummus is the salt and garlic. Dogs that eat too much salt or garlic are at risk for health problems.

If you notice that your dog has abdominal pain or gastrointestinal irritation after eating hummus, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Is Hummus Good For Dogs

Hummus is a healthy snack for humans, but not for dogs. It is low in calories and sugar, but salt and garlic are problematic for your fur baby.

Is Hummus Healthy For Dogs

There are health benefits of hummus, but they don’t negate the dangerous ingredients. The nutritional benefits of hummus include healthy fatty acids from chickpeas, vitamin B6, and vitamins A.

Tahini has ingredients in it that are known to lower blood pressure. The high protein content in hummus can help regulate blood sugar.

Is Hummus Safe For Dogs

As a human food, this is safe for dogs to eat in really small quantities. One teaspoon of hummus probably won’t affect your dog.

Just like with other types of food, it all depends on the size of your pet. Small dogs can handle less hummus than larger breeds.

Is Hummus Harmful To Dogs

Large amounts of hummus can cause bad reactions in some dogs. This is because it might contain harmful ingredients in it. The most toxic ingredients in hummus are garlic and salt.

Lemon juice is also dangerous for dogs.

The psoralen compounds in lemon juice can cause health issues in dogs, like weakness, vomiting, and diarrhea. These reactions are more likely if your dog eats a lot of lemon juice, so a small amount of hummus might not hurt them like this.

Is Hummus OK For Dogs

Small amounts of hummus can be just fine for dogs to eat once in a while.

How much hummus can a dog eat? Only allow your dog to eat a small portion at a time. The primary ingredient is safe for dogs, but the other added ingredients are not. One small teaspoon of hummus as a treat can be safe, but it’s best not to give them any.

Hummus For Dogs – Different Flavors

Now let’s look at the most common types of hummus you might find at the grocery store and whether they are safe or dangerous for dogs to eat.

Classic Hummus

As long as it is low in salt and doesn’t have much garlic in it, classic hummus is safe for dogs to eat in very small amounts.

Fresh Hummus (Homemade)

If you make homemade hummus with healthy ingredients and don’t use added salt, garlic, or lemon juice, it is safe to share with your dog.

Chocolate Hummus

Do not give your dog chocolate hummus. Even though a spoonful of it might not hurt your dog, it is still safer to keep all types of chocolate away from dogs.

Garlic Hummus

No, dogs should not eat garlic hummus. Garlic, and other members of the allium family, are dangerous for dogs to eat.

Green Hummus

There are usually onions and garlic in green hummus. These are not safe for dogs to eat. The other ingredients – spinach and cilantro – are safe for dogs to eat. If you make this at home, just leave out the garlic and onions, and it is safe to share with your dog.

Olive Hummus

Olive hummus is safe for dogs to eat in very small amounts. It’s even better for them if you make it at home and leave out the garlic and salt. Read more about dogs and olives.

Pine Nut Hummus

Pine nuts are safe for your dog to eat. As long as the hummus doesn’t have too much salt or garlic in it, they can eat pine nut hummus.

Read this guide about nuts dogs can eat to learn about all the other types of nuts you can share with your dog.

Pumpkin Hummus

Yes, dogs can eat pumpkin hummus in small amounts. Pumpkin is a safe ingredient to share with your dog. In fact, you can make homemade pumpkin dog treats that your pet would love.

Red Pepper Hummus

No, dogs should not eat red pepper hummus. It usually has too much garlic and salt in it to be a safe snack for your dog.

Vegan Hummus

Most types of hummus are naturally vegan since they are made with nuts and oils. As long as the vegan hummus doesn’t contain too much salt or any garlic or onion, it is safe to give your dog in small amounts.

Sabra Hummus

Look at the ingredients label before you share Sabra hummus with your dog. Do not give your pet anything that has too much salt or any garlic or onions in it.

Can Dogs Eat Hummus That Has Expired?

No, dogs should not eat hummus that has expired. There is a risk of bacteria growing in it at this point.

Is hummus that was left out overnight safe to eat? Hummus is only safe to eat if you leave it out for four hours. After those four hours, food-borne bacteria had a chance to grow and could harm you or your pet.

Can Dogs Eat Hummus Chips

Hummus chips are usually baked and made with chickpea flour and potato starch. Dogs should not eat hummus chips unless you make them at home without salt or garlic. Salted hummus chips are dangerous for dogs to eat due to the risk of sodium poisoning.

My Dog Ate Hummus – What Do I Do?

The first thing you should do is look at what kind of hummus your dog ate. What are the ingredients in it? Then look at how much they ate. Finally, watch for any immediate symptoms or reactions. Give your dog plenty of water and trips outside.

If you notice your dog acting sick, call your veterinarian.

Dogs and Hummus: Final Thoughts

As you can see, a small amount of hummus might not hurt your dog. Too much hummus might give your pet stomach aches, vomiting, or diarrhea. It’s always best to keep this away from your dog if you can.

    Hello dear Renee.
Thank you for your wonderful informative and loving messages. We are also dog
lovers for decades. Careful what to feed to our dog. He is eating home cooked food.
When our dog was about one year old he was infected with fleas real bad. We do not
like chemical treatments because it is shortening the life of the dog. We were searching for a solution to the flea problem. Finally we found it and our beloved baby is 8 years old and no more fleas or any other bothersome insects on his body. We are giving him a minced clove of garlic in his food every day. He is as healthy as a dog could be. Shiny coat, no bad breath full of energy and love. We agree garlic
could be dangerous to the dog if too much is given. He is 54 Lbs and one cove of
garlic a day doing wonders against fleas.

    With blessings,
    E.
