Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe adapts easily to what you have on hand or to your dog’s dietary preferences. Here are some simple swaps and things to keep in mind.

  • Lamb can be replaced with lean ground beef, bison, chicken, or turkey.
  • Barley can be swapped with quick-cooking rice or pearl couscous.
  • Carrots can be substituted with parsnips.
  • Cabbage can be replaced with green beans, broccoli, zucchini, kale, or spinach.
  • Water can be replaced with beef or chicken broth for added flavor. Just be sure the broth contains no onions or garlic.

How to Make Ground Lamb and Barley Dog Food

This recipe comes together quickly, and the entire dish cooks in a single skillet for easy cleanup. Here’s what to do:

  1. Chop the carrots and cabbage.
  2. Add the olive oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground lamb and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  3. Drain any excess fat, then return the lamb to the skillet. Add the carrots, cabbage, pearled barley, and water. Stir to combine.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Turn off the heat, cover again, and let the mixture sit for at least 5 minutes or until the water is absorbed.
  6. Cool the food completely before serving it to your dog.

How to Store The Food and How Long It Will Last

For longer storage, freeze it in individual portions using freezer-safe containers or plastic freezer bags. It will keep for up to 3 months. Thaw each portion in the refrigerator overnight.

You can warm it slightly in the microwave before serving, but do not serve it hot to your dog.

Is this recipe suitable for puppies?

While the ingredients are generally safe, puppies have specific nutritional requirements that differ from adult dogs. Always check with your veterinarian before feeding homemade meals to a puppy.
