Benefits of Salmon for Dogs

Salmon is an excellent source of protein. It’s a common ingredient in many commercial and high-quality dog foods.

Salmon is a great source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which support a healthy immune system, and heart health. Its anti-inflammatory properties may decrease inflammation. It also supports cognitive function.

Are salmon treats good for dogs? Yes! Salmon based dog treats definitely are healthy.

Ingredients

The entire ingredient list, quantities of each, and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

These salmon treats are made with common ingredients you can find at any grocery store. If you want to make organic salmon dog treats you will need to use organic ingredients.

First, I want to share some additional information about the ingredients I used in these treats:

  • Canned Salmon is already cooked and a great source of protein
  • Egg is a binder and adds extra protein
  • Oat Flour is gluten-free and has fiber along with a multitude of vitamins and minerals
  • Brown Rice Flour is gluten-free and has fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein
  • Parsley is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K which support a healthy immune system. It’s also a good source of folate and iron.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • You can make oat flour and brown rice flour by blending old-fashioned rolled oats or uncooked brown rice in a blender or food processor until it has a flour consistency.
  • You can substitute brown rice flour with spelt flour.
  • Do not substitute either flour with coconut flour. It absorbs too much moisture and the treats won’t hold together.
  • You can substitute the parsley with any dog-safe herbs. Rosemary is a great choice.

Equipment Needed

You probably have all the equipment needed for making this dog meatball recipe. Just in case, here are a few of the important ones:

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Large Mixing Bowl

You can change the size of the balls to make large or mini treats. The cooking time will have to be adjusted as smaller ones will cook faster and large ones will take longer.

You can also flatten the balls slightly to make thick round patties.

Serving Size

How many salmon treats should you give your dog? A serving would be from 1 to 3 based on your dog’s size. One for small dogs, two for medium-sized, and three for larger dogs.

Always start with small quantities when giving your dog any new foods or treats.

Maintaining a dog’s healthy weight is very important. Keep that in mind when feeding dogs anything in addition to their regular dog food.

How to Store

Store these baked salmon balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 5 days.

You can freeze them for longer storage. Place the treats on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet with space between them. Freeze them, then transfer the frozen treats to a plastic freezer bag.

Frozen salmon meatball treats will last up to 3 months. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight.

Can humans eat homemade salmon dog treats?

Yes, absolutely! All of the ingredients in these salmon snacks for dogs are safe for human consumption. You could give them a try and see. They would be kind of like baked salmon patties.
