Why You and Your Dog Will Love These Treats
There are so many reasons that your furry companions will enjoy these treats! Dogs usually eat with their nose first. Since these treats are made from fresh salmon filets, your dog will be able to smell them, and this will make them super ready to eat!
The crispy texture is a lot of fun for your dog too. Dogs love crispy and crunchy snacks, and these deliver that.
Then there’s also that salty flavor that your dog gets without you having to add any salt at all! They are savory and tasty and super simple.
Benefits of Salmon Skin for Dogs
There are many health benefits of salmon skin for dogs (and people too!). You probably already know the first one because it’s the biggest benefit of salmon. Yes, the omega-3 fatty acids are super good for your dogs. They support your dog’s brain and muscle development.
The skin is also high in protein, which helps your dog build those lean muscles. Plus, animal protein should make up most of your dog’s diet and this can be a part of that.
Ingredients
You only need 3 simple ingredients to cook salmon skin for dogs. Well, only 2 if you happen to have just the skin of the salmon. However, this recipe includes an easy way of getting skin off fresh fish. Anyway, here’s what you’ll need:
- Raw Salmon Fillets – any type of salmon will do. You’ll want pieces about the size of your hand.
- Water – for removing the skin
- Coconut Oil – to help make the skin crispy and keep it from sticking to the air fryer basket
Equipment Needed
The only special equipment you’ll need to make this recipe is an air fryer. But you can bake the skin in an oven if you don’t have one. See below for oven instructions.
How to Cook Salmon Skin for Dogs
Cooking salmon skin is so easy, especially in an air fryer! Here are the simple steps and some photos to help you along the way.
- Put the salmon fillets skin side up on a rimmed baking sheet or in a large baking dish.
- Pour boiling water over the fillets.
- Peel off the skin.
- Dry the skin on paper towels.
- Brush oil on the skin.
- Air fry at 400°F until crispy, about 8 minutes.
- Let them cool completely before giving them to your dog.
You can then cook the skinless salmon fillets for yourself or your dog or make salmon dog food with them. Coat them with oil and air fry at 400°F for about 8 minutes, or until the salmon easily flakes with a fork. If cooking for you, season them before air frying. Otherwise, plain is best for dogs.
Recipe Variation – Oven Method
You don’t need an air fryer to make this snack for your dog. You can use your oven instead!
Don’t have an air fryer? Here’s what to do:
- Put the oiled skin on a wire rack over a baking sheet.
- Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes or until crispy.
Serving Size
How many salmon skin treats should you give your canine companion? That depends on the size of your dog. Large dogs can consume more than smaller dogs.
An important consideration is the size of the treat. The crispy skin can be a choking hazard. It’s a good idea to break it up into small pieces, especially if you have a little dog or if your dog has a tendency to swallow treats without chewing them.
I suggest giving your spoiled hound only a few of these treats per day. However, you can use your judgment or consult with your veterinarian regarding how many are right for your dog.
Also, keep in mind when adding new foods to your dog’s diet to start with small amounts to ensure your dog has no allergic or adverse reactions.
How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last
Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last up to 4 days.
Can people eat these treats?
Oh yes, they sure are safe for human consumption. Salmon skin is a tasty snack for people too. And some folks use it as salmon “bacon” and put it on fish sandwiches or crumble it into a salmon rice bowl.
