- Baking powder – Helps the pancakes rise and fluff up.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
You can tweak this recipe to suit your pup’s needs or use what you have on hand. Here are some helpful tips:
Baking powder is safe in small amounts, according to veterinarian Lauren Kennedy (source).
To make oat flour, blend old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender or food processor until fine and powdery.
Flour swaps: You can use brown rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Adjust the amount as needed, especially with whole wheat flour, which is denser and best used in combination.
Banana alternatives: Try unsweetened applesauce, plain pumpkin puree, mashed sweet potatoes, or mashed butternut squash.

How to Make Banana Dog Pancakes
Making these pancakes is just as easy as making your own, maybe even easier!
- In a medium bowl, stir or whisk together the oat flour and baking powder.
- In another bowl, mash the banana.
- Add the water and egg to the mashed banana and stir until smooth.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt a tablespoon of coconut oil in it.
- Pour about ¼ cup of batter per pancake into the skillet and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 5 minutes.
- Flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
- Transfer cooked pancakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, use a dog bone cookie cutter (or other fun dog-themed shapes) to cut them out if desired.

Recipe Tips
Here are a few extra tips to make these pancakes paw-fect:
- Make mini pancakes for smaller dogs or training treats.
- Don’t skip the cooling step! Hot pancakes can burn your pup’s mouth, so let them cool first.
- Make ahead and freeze. Store extras in the freezer for quick breakfasts later.
- Use a non-stick skillet or griddle for best results and easy flipping.

Recipe Variations
It’s easy to change up the recipe to make different flavored pancakes. Here are some ideas:
- Bacon Dog Pancakes – stir some cooked bacon pieces into the batter.
- Blueberry Dog Pancakes – stir some dried or fresh blueberries into the batter. Likewise with strawberries and raspberries.
- Buckwheat Dog Pancakes – substitute the oat flour with buckwheat flour.
- Carob Chip Dog Pancakes – stir some carob chips into the batter. Do not use regular chocolate chips because chocolate is toxic to dogs.
- Extra Fiber – stir 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed into the batter.
Dog Pancake Toppings
Want to make your pup’s pancake breakfast extra special? Try topping their pancakes with any of these dog-safe options:
- Banana slices
- Chopped apples or pears
- Berries like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries
- Natural nut or seed butter (peanut, almond, or sunflower – xylitol-free only!)
- Plain Greek yogurt
- Unsweetened applesauce
- Whipped Cream for Dogs
Just skip butter and syrup because they’re too rich and sugary for your pup’s tummy.

Serving Size
Treats like these should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. Always check with your vet if you’re unsure how many pancakes your pup can have in a day.
And remember, if your dog hasn’t had one of the ingredients before, start with a small piece and see how they do.
How to Store the Pancakes and How Long They Last
You can store leftover pancakes in an airtight container or zip-top bag in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Want to keep them longer? Freeze them for up to 4 months! Stack them with parchment paper in between to make it easy to grab one at a time.
To reheat:
- Oven: Place on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Microwave: Heat in 15-second intervals until warm.
Let cool before serving to avoid mouth burns.
Can people eat these pancakes?
Yes! These banana pancakes are made with all human-safe ingredients. They’re a little plain, but if you top yours with a pat of butter and a drizzle of maple syrup, they make a cozy breakfast for you too. Share breakfast with your pup and it’s a win-win!

Our 10 mos old Pomsky doesn’t like banana or peanut butter. 😊Any suggestions? He makes it hard to make treats…. He liked pumpkin in the beginning but now snubs that. Ooooo….maybe applesauce! But if you have any suggestions I would highly appreciate it.
Thank you. Shelly M
You can use unsweetened applesauce, cooked sweet potato, or plain yogurt (Greek yogurt is best).
my dog likes cheese and chicken he might like them in treats
Can I use rice flour instead of oat and buckwheat?
You can substitute white rice flour in a 1:1 ratio for them but start with .75:1 ratio with brown rice flour (3/4 cup for each 1 cup).
I looked online to see if baking powder is safe to give my dog. I’m getting that it is poisonous and can cause digestive issues. What can I substitute for this?
Baking powder is safe in small quantities. It’s harmful when dogs consume large quantities of it. A large quantity is about 1 teaspoon per pound of body weight. There’s 1 teaspoon in the recipe so it would be 1/8 of a teaspoon in a pancake if you make 8 pancakes.
Can I use greek yogurt instead? If so how much do I use?
I’m not sure which ingredient you want substitute the Greek yogurt with. You can’t substitute the banana with it. You can substitute the water with it, but the batter will be thicker and you may need to thin it down with a little water.
