Ingredients
The exact ingredient amounts and step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some information about the ingredients I used in this homemade dog pancakes recipe.
Here’s a list of what you’ll need. They are simple ingredients found in regular grocery stores. Oh, use organic ingredients if you want to make organic dog pancakes.
- Oat Flour – is a great flour to use for dogs with wheat allergies.
- Baking Powder – makes the pancakes rise and be a little fluffy.
- Banana – adds a little flavor, sweetness, and moisture to the batter. Also has vitamin B, vitamin C, and potassium.
- Egg – adds protein and omega-3 fatty acids and is a binder for the batter.
- Water – to add moisture to the batter.
- Coconut Oil – a healthy fat that’s great for cooking pancakes.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
When you make this dog pancake recipe, there are a few things to keep in mind:
If you do not have oat flour, you can make it by placing old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender and blending until it has the consistency of flour.
You can substitute all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour for the oat flour. The amount will have to be adjusted since those flours will cause the batter to have a different consistency. It will take less of those flours than oat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a good substitute to use by itself.
You can also top them with a little bit of peanut butter to make them an extra special homemade treat.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these pancake dog treats. Here’s a quick list just in case:

Recipe Variations
It’s easy to change up the recipe to make different flavored pancakes. Here are some ideas:
- Bacon Dog Pancakes – stir some cooked bacon pieces into the batter.
- Blueberry Dog Pancakes – stir some dried or fresh blueberries into the batter. Likewise with strawberries and raspberries.
- Buckwheat Dog Pancakes – substitute the oat flour with buckwheat flour.
- Chocolate Chip Dog Pancakes – stir some carob chips into the batter. Do not use regular chocolate chips because chocolate is toxic to dogs.
- Extra Fiber – stir 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed into the batter.
Dog Pancake Toppings
Wondering what you can put on the pancakes to give your dog their own special breakfast treat? You can serve these pancakes to your dog with a variety of toppings. Just note it’s best not to top them with butter and syrup because of the added dairy fat and sugar.
- Applesauce (unsweetened)
- Chopped apples
- Berries (blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
- Natural unsweetened peanut butter or SunButter
- Ripe banana slices
- Whipped Cream for Dogs
Serving Size
How many pancakes should you give your pup at once? That depends on the amount of food you gave your pet to eat that day and the size of your dog. Large dogs can consume more than smaller dogs.
Treats should be considered in your dog’s daily caloric intake. Make sure you don’t exceed the recommended amount for your dog.
Dogs shouldn’t have too many treats – including these yummy dog pancake treats. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one per day or a portion of one if you have a small dog.
However, you can use your own judgment regarding how many treats are right for your dog.
How to Store
Leftover pancakes should be stored in an airtight container or zip-top plastic bag. Keep them in the refrigerator or freeze them for longer storage.
Pro Tip: If freezing, place some wax or parchment paper between them to make it easy to get one out of the container.
Reheat dog pancakes in the oven just like you would do with human pancakes. Place them on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F until warm, about 5 to 7 minutes.
You can also microwave them on high power in 20-second increments until warm.
Just let the pancake cool a bit before giving one to your dog to avoid burning your dog’s mouth.
How Long Do Homemade Dog Pancakes Last?
Homemade dog pancakes will last up to 5 days in the refrigerator. They will last up to four months in the freezer.
Can Humans Eat These Dog Pancakes?
Yes, people can eat these dog pancakes. All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. Top them with butter and maple syrup and enjoy them along with your dog.

Our 10 mos old Pomsky doesn’t like banana or peanut butter. 😊Any suggestions? He makes it hard to make treats…. He liked pumpkin in the beginning but now snubs that. Ooooo….maybe applesauce! But if you have any suggestions I would highly appreciate it.
Thank you. Shelly M
Renee Dobbs says
You can use unsweetened applesauce, cooked sweet potato, or plain yogurt (Greek yogurt is best).

my dog likes cheese and chicken he might like them in treats
Isabel Pomario says
Can I use rice flour instead of oat and buckwheat?
Renee Dobbs says
You can substitute white rice flour in a 1:1 ratio for them but start with .75:1 ratio with brown rice flour (3/4 cup for each 1 cup).
Megan says
I looked online to see if baking powder is safe to give my dog. I’m getting that it is poisonous and can cause digestive issues. What can I substitute for this?
Renee Dobbs says
Baking powder is safe in small quantities. It’s harmful when dogs consume large quantities of it. A large quantity is about 1 teaspoon per pound of body weight. There’s 1 teaspoon in the recipe so it would be 1/8 of a teaspoon in a pancake if you make 8 pancakes.
Isabel says
Can I use greek yogurt instead? If so how much do I use?
Renee Dobbs says
I’m not sure which ingredient you want substitute the Greek yogurt with. You can’t substitute the banana with it. You can substitute the water with it, but the batter will be thicker and you may need to thin it down with a little water.
