Why You Will Love This Recipe
Making ice cream for your dog is a fun and thoughtful way to show you care, and these are just a few of the reasons why this will be a go-to recipe:
Made with wholesome, easy-to-find ingredients. A few simple pantry items and fresh fruit are all you need.
No fancy equipment needed. You don’t need an ice cream maker, just a blender and a freezer.
It’s dairy-free, sugar-free, and vegan. Perfect for dogs who can’t tolerate lactose. And sugar isn’t good for them either.
The peanut butter swirl makes it feel special. A little ribbon of peanut butter gives this frozen treat an extra flair.
Better than store-bought. Many commercial “dog ice creams” are full of preservatives or made from human ice cream, which often contains dairy and sugar that’s not ideal for pups.

Ingredients and What They Contribute
This dog ice cream is made with just a few simple ingredients that are not only easy to find, but also full of pup-approved flavor. Here’s what goes into this frozen treat:
- Ripe Bananas – Naturally sweet, fiber-rich, and creamy when frozen and blended. Bananas bring flavor and digestive benefits without added sugar.
- Lite Coconut Milk – A gentle, non-dairy milk alternative that adds smoothness and creaminess without the lactose.
- Natural Unsweetened Peanut Butter – It adds richness, flavor, and protein.
- Coconut Oil – Helps melt the peanut butter into a swirlable sauce and provides healthy fats for skin and coat support.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
When making this ice cream, safety comes first, and there are some options for swapping ingredients to fit your dog’s preferences:
- Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, a sweetener toxic to dogs.
- You can substitute peanut butter with unsweetened sunflower seed butter or almond butter. Make sure it does not contain xylitol.
- You can substitute lite coconut milk with plain Greek yogurt, though it will no longer be dairy-free.
How to Make Peanut Butter Banana Dog Ice Cream
Making this ice cream is super simple! Here’s what to do:
- Slice bananas into ½-inch pieces and freeze them until solid (about 1 hour).
- Place chilled coconut milk and frozen banana slices in a blender.
- Blend until it has a smooth, thick consistency.
- In a small bowl, combine coconut oil and peanut butter. Microwave in 10-second bursts until melted, then stir into a smooth sauce.
- Pour half of the ice cream mixture into a loaf pan lined with parchment paper.
- Drizzle half of the peanut butter sauce over it and gently swirl with a knife.
- Add the remaining banana mixture and repeat with the rest of the peanut butter swirl.
- Freeze for at least 4 hours, or until fully set.

Recipe Tips
- Plan ahead. Freeze banana slices and chill the coconut milk the day before.
- Double the swirl. Make extra peanut butter sauce for drizzling on top before serving.
Recipe Variations
There are a couple of different ways you can make this recipe – either cups or popsicles.
Ice Cream Cups (Pup Cups)
Use paper cups or a muffin tin lined with silicone cupcake liners.
- Fill cups ⅓ full with banana mixture.
- Drizzle peanut butter sauce.
- Add more banana mixture, then top with a final drizzle.
- Freeze and remove cups/liners before serving.
Popsicles (Pupsicles)
Use silicone molds or ice cube trays.
- Pour in the banana mixture.
- Drizzle or swirl in peanut butter sauce.
- Optional: Add a dog biscuit, jerky stick, carrot stick, or green bean for the handle.
- Freeze and pop out to serve.

How to Store the Ice Cream and How Long It Lasts
Press plastic wrap on the surface to help prevent ice crystals from forming. Wrap the loaf pan with plastic wrap and then with aluminum foil. Or you can place it in a large plastic freezer bag. It will last up to 4 months in the freezer.
Can people eat this dog ice cream?
Absolutely! It’s made entirely with human-safe ingredients. While it’s formulated for dogs and isn’t very sweet, this vegan, dairy-free, sugar-free ice cream is perfectly fine (and pretty tasty) for humans too.

i have been looking for a dog ice cream reciepe. Thank you so much🥰
Fun for the whole family and are pups love it
1 can of coconut milk is vague. Some are 16 oz while others are 13.5 or 15 oz Can you verify?
It’s the 13.5 ounce can and I’ll clarify it in the recipe card.
Hi, how long is this good for in the freezer?
It will last up to 4 months in the freezer.
Hi! Could we also use goat milk instead of coconut milk? I was wondering what consistency you get in your finished product? Is it hard, or somewhat scoopable? Thank you so much, I love your page! I’m a fellow homemade cook/baker of all things yummy & healthy for my fur babies. A lot of my recipes are my own, but anytime I’m stuck, or just looking for new inspiration & ideas, I always come to your page. Homemade ice cream is one I’ve been working on for a while.
Goat milk could be used, absolutely. But it is not as thickly textured as coconut milk. The coconut milk did make it scoopable. The thinner goat milk would make it harder.
