Ingredients and What They Bring to the Cake

Making your own dog cake means you control what goes into it. Here’s what each ingredient adds:

Cake

  • Coconut flour – High in fiber, and gives the cake structure with a light coconut aroma.
  • Baking powder & baking soda – Help the cake rise slightly and create a soft texture.
  • Peanut butter – Adds protein and flavor that dogs adore.
  • Low-fat plain Greek yogurt – Adds moisture and protein.
  • Banana – Naturally sweetens the cake and adds nutrients like potassium.
  • Eggs – Help bind the batter and add protein.
  • Coconut oil – Adds moisture and even more coconut goodness.

Frosting

  • Low-fat plain Greek yogurt – Creamy and spreadable, perfect for a dog-safe frosting.
  • Unsweetened shredded coconut – Adds texture and boosts the tropical flavor.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this cake, there are some things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Safety – Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol, a sweetener toxic to dogs.
  • Peanut Butter – Swap it with almond butter or sunflower seed butter (xylitol-free) if needed.
  • Banana – You can substitute with plain pumpkin puree, unsweetened applesauce, or mashed sweet potato.
  • Coconut Boost – Want it even more coconutty? Add ¼ to ⅓ cup of shredded coconut to the cake batter.
  • Dairy-Free – Use a plant-based yogurt instead of Greek yogurt for a dairy-free version.
  • Leaveners – Baking powder and baking soda are safe for dogs in small amounts. Source: Petco

How to Make Coconut Cake for Dogs

Making this dog-friendly cake is simple and fun! Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease three 4-inch cake or springform pans with coconut oil.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine coconut flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the peanut butter, yogurt, eggs, and melted coconut oil until smooth. Add the mashed banana and stir to combine.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix well to form the batter.
  5. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool completely in the pans before removing.

Frosting

  1. Mix together the yogurt and most of the shredded coconut.
  2. Spread frosting on each cake layer and stack them.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining coconut flakes on top for a pretty finish.

Recipe Variations

One Layer Cake – No 4-inch pans? No problem! Use an 8-inch round cake pan instead. The cake will be thinner, so reduce the bake time to around 15–18 minutes.

Coconut Pupcakes – Want to make cupcakes? Use a regular muffin pan and bake for about 15 minutes. For mini cupcakes, reduce bake time to about 10 minutes.

How to Store the Cake and How Long It Lasts

Wrap the cake with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container and refrigerate. It will keep for up to 5 days. Keep in mind that the yogurt frosting may soak into the cake a bit over time.

For longer storage, freeze the cake for up to 3 months. Wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap followed by aluminum foil. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Can people eat this cake?

Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients are safe for human consumption. It’s a great option for people cutting down on sugar. Give it a taste, and you might just love it too.
