Ingredients and What They Bring to the Cake

This cake is made with a mix of nourishing ingredients, and each one has a part in making it soft, moist, and flavorful. Here’s what you’ll need:

For the cake:

  • Apple – Adds natural sweetness, moisture, and a pop of fruity texture in every slice.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Naturally sweet and moist, it enhances the apple flavor.
  • Peanut Butter – A rich source of protein and flavor that dogs go nuts for.
  • Coconut Milk – Adds moisture and a bit of richness while being dairy-free.
  • Melted Coconut Oil – Helps keep the cake tender.
  • Egg – Acts as a binder and adds protein.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, nutritious flour perfect for dogs.
  • Brown Rice Flour – Adds structure and fiber.
  • Baking Powder & Baking Soda – Helps the cake rise just enough for a soft, tender crumb.

For the icing drizzle:

  • Peanut Butter – Makes a flavorful topping that pairs perfectly with the cake.
  • Melted Coconut Oil – Thins the peanut butter for easy drizzling and sets up nicely once cooled.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this apple peanut butter dog cake, there are a few things to keep in mind and easy swaps you can make:

  • Use xylitol-free peanut butter only. Xylitol is toxic to dogs and must be avoided.
  • You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter (make sure they’re xylitol-free).
  • Replace coconut milk with plain Greek yogurt if desired.
  • A small amount of baking powder and baking soda is safe for dogs. Source: Petco
  • You can make oat flour or rice flour at home by blending rolled oats or uncooked rice until fine. One cup yields about ¾ cup of flour.
  • Substitute either flour with all-purpose flour, or use a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Avoid using only whole wheat flour because it will make the cake too dense.
  • Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture and can affect the texture of the cake.

How to Make Peanut Butter Apple Cake for Dogs

Making this yummy cake is super simple. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with coconut oil or non-stick spray.
  2. Peel, core, and chop the apple into small cubes.
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together the oat flour, brown rice flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, peanut butter, coconut milk, egg, melted coconut oil, and chopped apple.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until fully combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. Bake for 23–26 minutes, or until the center is set and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. To make the drizzle, mix together peanut butter and melted coconut oil in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cake with a spoon.

Recipe Variation – Pupcakes

Turn this apple peanut butter dog cake into adorable cupcakes! Just:

  • Spoon the batter into a muffin pan, filling each cavity about ⅔ full.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes for regular-sized cupcakes, or 10 minutes for minis.
  • Cool and drizzle with the icing as you would for the loaf cake.

How to Store the Cake and How Long It Lasts

Wrap the cake in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

To freeze, wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil, or place it in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

Can people eat this cake?

Yep, they sure can! Every ingredient is safe for human consumption. It’s lightly sweetened with apple and great for those watching their sugar intake. Give it a try if you’re curious. You may want to enjoy this dessert along with your dog.
