Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There’s something special about making your own dog treats. It’s a small gesture that brings big tail wags. And this recipe is bound to become a go-to for good reason!

Wholesome Ingredients – These treats are made with real, recognizable ingredients you can feel good about. There are no mystery fillers like in store-bought biscuits.

Easy to Make – Making these is just like baking a batch of cookies. Stir, roll, cut, and bake. That’s it!

Simple to Customize – Whether your dog has dietary needs or you’re working with what’s in your pantry, it’s easy to make swaps and change it up.

Save Money – DIY dog treats are often much less expensive than the fancy store-bought kind and way more rewarding to make.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Here’s a quick peek at what goes into these tasty treats and why each ingredient is a great addition:

  • Chia Seeds – A tiny but mighty ingredient full of omega-3s, fiber, and minerals.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Adds moisture to the dough and a boost of protein.
  • Peanut Butter – Tasty, full of good fats, and a flavor dogs love.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – A natural way to add sweetness and vitamins A and C.
  • Oat Flour – Gentle on tummies and a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are a few important things to keep in mind and some simple swaps you can make:

  • Make sure your peanut butter does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter (xylitol-free).
  • You can swap applesauce with mashed banana, plain pumpkin puree, or cooked sweet potato.
  • To make oat flour, blend old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender until fine. One cup of oats makes about ¾ cup of oat flour.
  • If needed, you can substitute oat flour with all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour alone can make the dough too dense.

Equipment Needed

You likely have the kitchen items you need for making the treats. You can use any cookie cutter, but bone shaped cookie cutters make them extra cute.

Want to get really creative? Try a custom cookie cutter with your dog’s name or a fun shape. Search on eBay for lots of options.

How to Make Chia Seed Dog Treats

Here’s how to whip up a batch of these crunchy, wholesome treats:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Mix the chia and yogurt in a small bowl. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes so the seeds can soak.
  3. Combine peanut butter and applesauce in a separate bowl, then stir it into the yogurt-chia mixture. Let that rest for another 5 minutes.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the oat flour in a large bowl.

  2. Roll out the dough to about ⅓ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes using your favorite cookie cutter.
  3. Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the treats are set and lightly golden.
  5. Cool completely before serving or storing.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Once the treats are cool, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Absolutely! These are made with ingredients that are safe for humans. Give one a nibble and see what you think. Your dog might even share them with you.

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. If you’re unsure about how many to give your pup, it’s always best to check with your vet.

And as always, if your dog hasn’t had one of these ingredients before, try just a small bite to start and watch for any sensitivities or reactions.
