Before sharing your charcuterie with your pup, ask, can dogs eat gouda cheese? Keep your furry friend safe and read this guide before giving them any cheese.

Maybe you’ve heard about the dangers of blue cheese for dogs. So, now you’re wondering, will your dog get adverse reactions from gouda cheese too? Keep reading to learn whether gouda is good for dogs.

For ultimate pet safety, please ask your vet any questions you have regarding your dog eating gouda cheese.

What Is Gouda Cheese

Gouda is a type of cheese that comes from the Netherlands. It’s a semi-hard cheese that’s usually made from cow’s milk. It has a strong and unique smell and tastes slightly like caramel.

You’ll also recognize it because it’s usually sold with a tough rind that you don’t eat.

What Is Gouda Cheese Used For

Gouda cheese is used in two popular ways. It’s used on charcuterie boards and as a melting cheese. If it’s used as a melting cheese, you can find it in homemade mac and cheese recipe, cheese-based soup, or even in fondue.

Can Dogs Have Gouda Cheese

Yes, your canine companions can have a small amount of cheese, as long as they aren’t lactose intolerant. You’ll know your dog is lactose intolerant if the cheese gives them digestive upset, like gas or diarrhea.

Most adult dogs can handle a small amount of gouda cheese. And it is one of the best cheeses to use for training purposes because it has such a strong flavor and aroma.

Can Dogs Eat Smoked Gouda Cheese

Due to the high salt content in smoked gouda cheese, it’s not a good choice to give your dog, even as a special treat.

Dogs are very sensitive to salt, and too much could dehydrate them dangerously. Don’t give your dog cheese that is smoked or has too much salt in it.

Is Gouda Cheese Good for Dogs

As long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, gouda cheese might not give them an upset stomach. In this case, a little bit of gouda treat could be both a healthy and tasty treat.

Gouda cheese contains essential fatty acids and is a good source of protein. Dogs should always get their protein from animal meat, but there are still other healthy nutrients in gouda too.

Before you introduce new food – like Gouda -into your dog’s diet, make sure that they can tolerate other dairy products.

A small bit – like an ounce a day – of gouda can be good for healthy dogs.

Is Gouda Cheese OK For Dogs

Just like other similar kinds of cheese, gouda is ok for dogs as an occasional treat. It has less lactose than other types of cheese, so it is easier for dogs to digest. But large amounts could give your dog a stomach ache or gas.

Due to the high-fat content, you should be careful with how much cheese your dog eats.

Is Gouda Cheese Bad For Dogs

Gouda is non-toxic to dogs. It’s not a good idea to give dairy produces, like cheese, to dogs that suffer from lactose intolerance.

What type if cheese is dangerous? Blue cheese is one of the most dangerous types of cheese for dogs.

Remember, dogs shouldn’t eat blue cheese because it has roquefortine c in it, which is a fungus that can make dogs sick. The good news is that Gouda doesn’t have that fungus in it.

Gouda also isn’t good for dogs that have health issues like high blood pressure or kidney problems.

How Much Gouda Cheese Can Dogs Eat

How much cheese you let your dog eat depends on what else they ate that day. Dogs shouldn’t eat too much fat, salt, or calories.

For this reason, it’s not a good idea to let your dog eat more than a few bites of cheese a day.

Dogs that eat too many calories will – just like us – be at a higher risk for unhealthy weight gain.

Final Thoughts

Just like other types of human foods, gouda cheese is a good option to share with your dog in small quantities. A few small pieces each day probably won’t hurt your dog. If your fur baby has health problems, they should avoid aged cheeses.

Please talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about giving your dog a cheesy treat especially if they have digestive issues.
