Dogs can eat meat, but can dogs eat chorizo? Read this complete guide to dogs and chorizo before you share some with your pup.

Whether you like the Mexican version or Spanish versions, keep reading to learn about common ingredients in both and what to do if your dog eats chorizo.

For ultimate pet safety, please ask your vet any questions you have regarding your dog eating chorizo.

What Is Chorizo

There are two types of chorizo – Mexican and Spanish – but both are spiced pork meat.

Spanish chorizo is cured and has a hard texture. The red color comes from the large amounts of paprika in it. Other ingredients in it include herbs, garlic, and white wine. It is usually aged for several weeks.

Mexican chorizo is completely different. It is ground and fresh, not sliced or cured. It is made with other spices and pork fat is often added to it. It is often used as one of the main ingredients in Mexican cuisine like tacos and burritos.

Mexican chorizo might have chile peppers in it.

Can Dogs Have Chorizo

Even though pork is a good source of protein for your furry friend, you should not give them any kind of chorizo.

Just like hot dogs, chorizo is a processed kind of meat. There are different ways to make it, but all kinds contain too much salt for your dog. Salt poisoning is dangerous.

In fact, large amounts of chorizo contain no health benefits and only lots of dangers for dogs.

Both Mexican and Spanish chorizo is high in fat and salt and processed with harmful ingredients and seasonings.

Depending on which kind you buy, it might have any of the following ingredients in it that are not good for dogs:

  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Chili peppers
  • White Wine
  • Chili Powder
  • Paprika Powder
  • High Amounts of Salt

It doesn’t matter how much chorizo you want to give your pup; breakfast sausages like this are not a good idea for them to eat.

Can Chorizo Kill Dogs

It’s very important that dogs do not eat chorizo, because large quantities of chorizo sausage (and high sodium levels in it) could lead to sodium poisoning. The large amount of onions could also put your dog at risk of getting Heinz Body Anemia.

Heinz body anemia is a type of hemolytic anemia, which happens when red blood cells break down faster than your dog’s body can replace them.

Dogs get canine Heinz body anemia from ingesting cooked, uncooked, or dehydrated onions.

The high fat content of chorizo could also put them at risk for health issues like heart disease, stomach problems, joint pain, allergic reaction, or gastrointestinal irritation.

Chorizo is also really high in salt. Salt poisoning causes electrolyte imbalances in dogs with the following symptoms:

  • Coma
  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Death
  • Extreme thirst and urination
  • Fluid buildup
  • High fever
  • Increased heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Lack of energy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle spasms
  • Respiratory distress
  • Seizures
  • Tongue swelling
  • Vomiting
  • Walking like intoxicated
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Weakness

Can Puppies Eat Chorizo

No, puppies cannot eat chorizo. Even small amounts of it could give them an upset stomach. Plus, small dogs should not eat that much pork fat.

It’s best to give puppies dog food that is formulated just for them.

Can Dogs Eat Raw Chorizo

Absolutely not. Do not give your dog chorizo that has not been cooked.

Even a small portion of uncooked chorizo could harm your pet. It puts them at risk of getting food poisoning. Raw pork often contains e. coli, just like raw eggs.

If your dog eats raw chorizo, they are also at risk of getting a parasitic infection.

Can Dogs Eat Cooked Chorizo

Dog owners should not give their dog this type of pork sausage, even if it is cooked. Even small pieces have too much salt to be safe for dogs.

When your dog eats a lot of salt, they are at risk of getting salt poisoning.

Chorizo also has so much fat in it that it could cause your dog to gain an unhealthy amount of weight.

Even as a special treat, spicy sausage contains high salt content that puts dogs at risk for salt poisoning and kidney damage.

Types Of Chorizo & Dogs

All types of chorizo are unsafe for your canine companions to eat. Whether you like beef chorizo, pork chorizo, or soy chorizo, these food items are not a good idea for dogs.

In fact, any type of sausage is unhealthy for dogs to eat. These food items are too greasy and contain too much fat for dogs.

Can Dogs Eat Chorizo and Eggs

No, dogs should not eat chorizo and eggs. Eating this much fat in food could lead to heart problems for your pet, including high blood pressure.

Can Dogs Eat Chorizo and Potatoes

Dogs should also not eat chorizo and potatoes. The harmful effects of eating high-fat foods like this could lead to serious health problems like heart disease or diabetes.

My Dog Ate Chorizo – What Do I Do

First, take notice or try to find out what kind of chorizo your dog ate and how much. Then, watch for signs of an upset stomach. A little bit of white rice might help settle their nausea or stomach upset.

Look for signs of an allergic reaction, like skin irritation, sneezing, or coughing.

Contact your dog’s veterinarian if you have any questions about your dog’s health.

Final Thoughts

Chorizo is not a good choice to feed your dog. It’s better to find healthy alternatives, like ground chicken or turkey. Always give your dog unflavored meat to avoid possible overexposure to salt or other unsafe spices.
