Why You Will Love This Recipe

Making homemade chew treats for your dog is incredibly rewarding. Watching them sniff the air while the treats dry and then seeing their excitement when they finally get one makes the effort worthwhile. There are so many reasons this recipe will be a favorite.

Easy to Make – These treats require very little prep. Simply slice the ingredients, wrap them together, and dry them in a dehydrator or oven.

Wholesome Ingredients – This recipe uses only two simple, dog-safe ingredients with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Great for Chewers – Once dehydrated, the treats have a chewy texture that many dogs enjoy. They make a satisfying snack for dogs that like longer-lasting treats.

Why Chicken and Sweet Potato Make Great Dog Treats

Chicken and sweet potatoes are both popular ingredients in homemade dog treats because they are simple, nutritious foods that many dogs tolerate well. Chicken provides lean protein, while sweet potatoes add fiber and natural flavor. Together they create a chewy treat made from real ingredients you can feel good about giving your dog.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

These treats use just two ingredients, each contributing flavor and texture.

  • Boneless skinless chicken breast (or turkey breast) – Provides lean protein and wraps easily around the sweet potato strips.
  • Sweet potato – Adds natural sweetness, fiber, and structure for the chew.

Equipment Needed

You may have the kitchen items you need to make these dehydrated chicken dog treats. But just in case, here’s what you need:

  • A plastic dishwasher-safe cutting board is best for raw meat.
  • A good, sharp chef’s knife to cut through the chicken and sweet potato.
  • Food Dehydrator to dehydrate the chicken. Or use your oven.

How to Make Chicken Wrapped Sweet Potato Dog Treats

These treats are simple to prepare and can be made using either a dehydrator or your oven.

Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Peel the sweet potato and slice it into long, thin strips similar to fries.
  2. Slice the chicken breast into thin strips about ¼-inch thick.
  3. Wrap a strip of chicken around each sweet potato strip, covering it from one end to the other.

Dehydrator Method

  1. Place the chicken-wrapped sweet potato strips on the dehydrator trays in a single layer.
  2. Dehydrate at 150°F for 5 to 6 hours, or until the treats show no visible moisture when broken apart.
  3. To ensure the treats reach a safe temperature, place them on a baking sheet and bake in a 275°F oven for about 10 minutes to reach 165°F.

  1. Let the treats cool to room temperature before storing them.

Oven Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°F.
  2. Place the wrapped strips on a parchment-lined or lightly greased baking sheet.
  3. Put the baking sheet in the oven and slightly prop the door open to allow moisture to escape.
  4. Dehydrate for 3 to 4 hours, or until the treats are fully dried with no visible moisture.

Recipe Tips for Success

A few simple tips can help you get the best results.

  • Partially freeze the chicken breast for about 15 minutes before slicing to make it easier to cut thin strips.
  • Slice the sweet potato evenly so the treats dry at the same rate.
  • Arrange the treats in a single layer without overlapping so air can circulate properly.
  • Dehydrating time can vary from 3 to 6 hours, depending on the thickness of the slices and the drying method used.

How to Store Dehydrated Dog Treats

Allow the treats to cool completely to room temperature before storing them.

Place them in an airtight container or plastic zip-top bag and store them on the counter or in your pantry.

For longer storage, freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag.

How Long Dehydrated Dog Treats Last and How to Tell if They Spoil

How long the treats last depends on how much moisture remains in them. At room temperature, they can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

If you notice any mold, unusual odor, or signs of spoilage, discard the treats.

Freezing is the best option for long-term storage. Frozen treats will last up to 4 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes, sweet potatoes and chicken are definitely safe for human consumption. Give one a try and see if you like it.

Some air fryers have a dehydrate setting, use that if you have it. If there is no dehydrate setting, then set to the lowest temperature setting. It will probably take around 6 hours but I don’t know for sure because I haven’t tested it. So check periodically to see when it is finished.
