My Whippet Dream Come True

Renee Dobbs · March 17, 2018 · Leave a Comment

A long time ago, I had a dream about whippets. This was way back when Tiger was a puppy. I don’t know what triggered it. Who really knows what happens in our minds while we sleep and why? It’s all a big guess. Anyway, this one particular dream had me smiling when I woke up that morning. I told my husband about it later in the day. Then later on a special day, he made my whippet dream come true.

I dreamt of walking outside on our deck. It was a warm day and I was about to leave for an errand. I looked over and saw two female whippets by the fence. They were barking and playing. I called out “Come here, Lexie and Trixie! Come here!” to get them inside. They turned and came running toward me.

What’s strange is I have no idea of how the image of those whippets got in my head. The only other whippets I had seen was the first one I ever saw, Devo and his littermate, and Tiger and the other whippets his breeder had. The two in my dream didn’t look like any of them. It was very odd indeed.

A while after that dream, we were dealing with Tiger’s boundless energy and separation anxiety. Pancho was not as interested in playing with Tiger as Tiger was with him. One morning I told my husband I wished we had another whippet for Tiger to play with. He gave me a “no way” look. I figured having three dogs was not an option. So I didn’t think about it again. We’d just get through Tiger’s puppy phase and work on his separation anxiety.

Many months later, it was the day before my 40th birthday. I was stuck at work past the time I usually left for the day. I had to wait until the tech guys finished installing a new phone in my boss’s office so I could lock it up. Of course, they were having issues and it was taking a long time. My husband kept calling and asking when I’d be home. I figured he had some plans to take me out to dinner. The second the tech guys were done, I locked my boss’s office and headed home.

I walked in the door from the garage and rounded the corner. As I walked toward the foyer, a puppy walked from the den towards me. OMG, a PUPPY! I put my stuff down and went right to it. Then another puppy came into the room. There were two puppies! Two whippet puppies! Two girl whippet puppies!

Trixie and Lexie on the day I was surprised with them for my 40th birthday.

I was shocked and beyond happy. It was the best birthday surprise ever. I knew what to name them from that dream I had. All I had to do was decide which one to name Lexie and the other Trixie. I decided on Lexie for the white one with brindle spots and Trixie for the fawn colored one.

The night my husband surprised me with these two whippet puppies for my birthday.

Fast forward to a few years later. I had let the dogs out and heard them barking. I walked out on the deck to see what was going on. There was a deer on the other side of the fence and the girls were barking at it. I called out “Come here, Lexie and Trixie! Come here!” to get them inside. It was at that moment I realized my dream years ago was a glimpse of the future.

Oh, about having more than two dogs being out of the question. Obviously, it wasn’t. Two suddenly became four and it was a happy pack. Tiger’s separation anxiety disappeared with the addition of Lexie and Trixie. I was in heaven with four dogs that would snuggle with me.

Here we are piled up on the couch.

And that’s the story of when my husband made my whippet dream come true. My 40th birthday will always be my favorite one. The gift of Lexie and Trixie was truly one of love.
