For ultimate pet safety, I recommend consulting with your vet about all the questions you have about your dog eating pretzels.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzels

From chewy soft pretzels to the crunchy snags you can buy at the grocery store, there are tons of different types of pretzels out there. Are dogs allowed to eat pretzels?

This guide is going to look at all of the different types of pretzels and how safe or dangerous it is for dogs to eat them.

Please remember, I am not a veterinarian. These tips are meant for informational purposes. If you have specific questions about dogs and pretzels, the best person to ask is your vet.

Are Pretzels Bad For Dogs

Hard and soft pretzels alike are known for having lots of salt. Too much salt is potentially toxic to dogs, so you should be careful with how many salty snacks they eat in a day.

A 33-pound dog should only have 100mg of salt per day. To put that in perspective, there is about twice that amount in just 23 pretzel sticks.

While a few bites of a pretzel probably won’t hurt them, overeating salty foods could.

The good news is that it takes quite a bit of salt to cause salt poisoning in dogs. Talk to your vet if you notice any of these signs:

  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Walking Like Intoxicated
  • Watery Diarrhea
  • Lack of Energy
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Convulsions
  • Excessive Thirst

My Dog Ate A Pretzel – What Do I Do

If you notice that your dog got into a bag of pretzels, give them plenty of water and just watch them. They might have to go out to use the bathroom more frequently.

Watch out for the signs of salt poisoning. If your dog acts sick, call your veterinarian.

Chances are your dog will probably be just fine but don’t ignore any signs of illness.

If your dog ate one soft pretzel or just a few hard snack pretzels, you probably won’t notice any negative reactions.

Remember, small amounts of salt won’t harm dogs, but too much will.

Can Dogs Have Pretzels

Since pretzels are so high in salt and carbs, they should not have pretzels of any sort. They do not have any nutritional value for your dog and they could lead to either salt toxicity, obesity, or related health issues.

There is a huge variety of pretzels out there. Let’s look closely at each one and see how safe or dangerous they are for your pet.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzels With Salt

No, dogs should not eat pretzels with salt. Salt is dangerous for dogs. Eating too much of it could lead to digestion problems at best and death at worst.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzels Without Salt

Dog owners, we want to share something with our fur babies, I get it. So what about without salt? Can dogs eat unsalted pretzels?

No, dogs should not eat unsalted pretzels either. While a few of them won’t hurt them, pretzels are still high in carbs and sugar. Too many carbs will cause your pup to gain weight which could lead to other health issues like heart disease and diabetes.

Can Dogs Eat Soft Pretzels

Soft pretzels are just as safe as cornbread, so it’s safe to give your dog a bite of a soft pretzel on rare occasions but you shouldn’t make it a regular part of their diet. They are not the best dog treats and they aren’t a healthy snack, but they are safe for your furry friends.

Can Dogs Eat Hard Pretzels

If you can limit how many hard pretzels your dog eats, it is safe for them to munch on one or two bites.

The best idea is to keep hard pretzels away from your pet. It has way too much salt on it for it to be a safe snack for them.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzel Sticks

Dogs should not regularly over-indulge in pretzel sticks. In just 23 pretzel sticks there is twice the daily amount of sodium.

If you can limit it to a few pretzel sticks, your dog can safely eat them once in a while.

Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter Pretzels

Even though peanut butter is safe for dogs, peanut butter pretzels are not a good idea.

There is 3 times your dog’s daily amount of sodium in just 11 pieces. Don’t let your dog eat them.

Can Dogs Eat Yogurt Covered Pretzels

Salt and carbs are not the only dangerous ingredients in popular pretzel snacks. Sugar and dairy are both dangerous for dogs too.

There are 19 grams of sugar in just 8 pieces of yogurt-covered sweet pretzels. Too much sugar can lead to obesity and diabetes in dogs. Do all you can to just keep sugary treats away from your dog.

You should also keep your dog away from any kind of pretzels that have artificial sweeteners. Look for harmful ingredients like Xylitol that is unsafe for small dogs or any dogs.

Can Dogs Eat White Fudge Covered Pretzels

White fudge-covered pretzels, surprisingly, have less sugar than yogurt-covered pretzels. Even so, it still has too much for you to give your dog safely.

The main ingredients in them are sugar, palm oils, and milk. These are all things that you should keep away from your pet.

Can Dogs Eat Sourdough Pretzels

Sourdough pretzels are typically larger than the other bite-sized snacks on this list. Just one sourdough pretzel has twice the safe amount of salt for dogs. Do not let them munch on one of these. This puts your dog at risk for sodium poisoning.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzel Chips

What about pretzel chips? Can dogs eat Pretzel Crisps?

No, dogs should not eat these either. The bad thing about these chips is that since they are so thin they are really easy to overeat. One serving size of Pretzel Crisps is 43 chips and there is 490 mg of salt in it! It is a popular snack for humans, but large quantities of excess salt are harmful to your dog’s digestive system.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzel Bread

In general, dogs should not eat bread. Too many carbs can negatively affect their blood sugar control and might lead to weight gain. This is what increases their risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.

The amount of salt and sugar in pretzel bread varies from brand to brand. It’s safest to just avoid it as much as possible.

Can Dogs Eat Pretzel Goldfish

Even though there is less salt on pretzel Goldfish crackers than traditional pretzels, you should still avoid giving it to your dog.

Its main ingredients are flour, oils, and salt. None of these ingredients are good for your pup in large amounts. Keep anything with a lot of salt away from your furry pal.

Can Dogs Eat Dots Pretzels

Dots Pretzels come in a fun twist shape. These are made in North Dakota and are popular across the country.

As delicious as they might be for us, you shouldn’t give any to your pet. Not only does it have a large amount of salt, but it also has garlic and onion powder on it too. Those are both unsafe for pets to eat.

Can Dogs Eat Mini Pretzels

If you can control how many mini pretzels you allow your dog to eat, it is safe for them to munch on one or two of them.

This has to be a very rare treat and do not give it to them on a regular basis. Don’t allow your dog to regularly eat human snack foods because there are too many carbs and sugars in them for your pet.

Can Dogs Eat Gluten-Free Pretzels

Gluten-free pretzels are still just as unhealthy for dogs as the wheat-flour varieties.

There is still way too much salt in them for your dog. These pretzels are made with corn starch, potato starch, and tapioca starch. None of those starches are beneficial for your dog in any way.

Your dog probably won’t have any side effects from it, but even these plain pretzels are just not nutritious for your canine friend.

Can Dogs Eat Cinnamon Pretzels

Dogs should not eat cinnamon pretzels. Too much sugar is detrimental to your dog’s health. It affects their blood sugar and could increase their risk for diabetes.

Can Dogs Eat Honey Pretzels

Honey pretzels are another variety that you should keep away from your dog. Even though honey itself is safe for dogs, too much sugar can actually lead to tooth decay, blood sugar issues, and obesity.

Can Dogs Eat Mustard Pretzels

Dogs should stay away from mustard pretzels too. They have far too many spices on them to be safe for your pet. Some varieties even have added sugars and horseradish that could upset your dog’s stomach.

Final Thoughts

The short answer is that pretzels are a bad snack for dogs. Even though eating a small bite of one once in a while won’t hurt your dog, you should still put this on your “not safe for dogs” list. Do not give your dog anything with toxic ingredients in it, including salty potato chips or salt.

You can make some homemade pretzels for dogs with only 4 simple and dog-safe ingredients.
