Before you share biscuits with your dog, read this guide – can dogs eat biscuits? It will tell you everything about dogs and biscuits.

There are so many kinds out there, so it’s no surprise that people are confused. Before you give your dog biscuits, read this entire guide.

For ultimate pet safety, I recommend consulting with your vet about all the questions you have about your dog eating biscuits.

What Are Biscuits?

The term biscuits can mean different things depending on where you’re using the word. No matter where you’re from, biscuits are usually made with some combination of flour and sugar. Let’s look closer at the differences between biscuits in the United States and in England.

USA vs UK Biscuits

In the United States of America, biscuits are a type of bread that resemble a scone. They are made from flour, baking powder, butter or shortening, milk or buttermilk, and salt. They are usually very flaky and are served with butter and jam, or used as a sandwich.

In the United Kingdom (England), biscuit is a word to describe what people in the United States call cookies. They are sweet baked goods typically made from flour, sugar, butter, margarine, and various flavorings such as chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors and are often enjoyed as a snack or dessert.

I’ll discuss both types of biscuits in this guide. But to prevent misunderstandings, my default will be referring to flaky biscuits.

Can Dogs Have Biscuits

We’ve all been there – eating our food while our canine companions beg for a bite (or even their own portion!). Even though small amounts of human biscuits probably won’t hurt your dog, it’s safer not to give them any biscuits unless they are made for dogs.

Here is what Applaws Pet Food has to say about biscuits and dogs:

“There might not be any real health or nutritional benefits from snacking on a biscuit, but they’re highly unlikely to harm your dog, so can be enjoyed as an occasional reward for good behavior.”

In other words, as long as the biscuits are made from dog-friendly ingredients and your dog doesn’t eat too many of them, it’s okay to share them with your dog. But the key is to watch for portion control.

Dogs that eat too many carbs or sugar are at risk of gaining too much weight. Unhealthy weight gain puts your pup at risk for heart disease, digestive issues, and diabetes.

Can Puppies Eat Biscuits

What about your little furry friend? Puppies should only eat a balanced diet that will support their growing bodies. They really shouldn’t eat any human food until they are older.

There is nothing nutritious about it, and they need all the nutrition that they can get.

Are Biscuits Healthy

When it comes to dogs, there isn’t any nutritional value in biscuits. What you add to the biscuits might have some nutrition, though.

For example, if you spread a bit of peanut butter on a biscuit, the peanut butter has essential fatty acids.

Even if you give your dog healthy toppings for the biscuits, the biscuits themselves are not healthy.

Are Biscuits Bad For Dogs

To really care for your dog’s health, you should avoid anything with artificial sweeteners or toxic ingredients.

Some cookies contain artificial sweeteners; others have ingredients that might make your dog exceed their maximum daily calorie intake.

To avoid an adverse reaction – like weight gain or stomach upset – do not give your dog food that is made for humans.

There are two other things that could be bad for dogs – wheat allergies and high amounts of sugar. If you don’t know if your dog has a wheat allergy, only give them a small bit and watch for signs of an allergic reaction like sneezing, itching, or coughing.

Can Dogs Eat Human Biscuits

Yes, biscuits made for humans can also be a tasty treat for dogs. In fact, dogs love them! You’ll probably get sad puppy dog eyes when you eat one, begging for a bite!

The short answer is that dogs can eat biscuits that are made with simple ingredients. If you made them at home, even better!

Can Dogs Eat Ginger Biscuits

Did you know that ginger is good for dogs? If your dog has an upset stomach, ginger can help calm it down. As long as the biscuits are made without harmful ingredients, sharing them with your pup is safe.

More Types Of Biscuits and Dogs

Since a lot depends on the type of biscuit you share with your dog, let’s look at all the different kinds of biscuits and whether they are safe for canines.

Remember, as long as they are made with natural ingredients that are non-toxic, it should be ok to share them with your pet. But your dog should get most of their calorie intake from their dog food.

  • Digestive Biscuits – This delicious treat originated in Scotland and is safe to share with dogs in moderation.
  • Marie Biscuits – These resemble a shortbread cookie and are safe for dogs in small amounts.
  • Rich Tea Biscuits – They are similar to Marie biscuits and safe for dogs in small doses.
  • Chocolate Biscuits – Do not give your dog chocolate biscuits
  • Popeye’s Biscuits – These are safe to share with dogs.
  • Malted Milk Biscuits – Yes, dogs can eat them in small amounts
  • Oat Biscuits – These are a good replacement if your dog is allergic to whole wheat flour.
  • Sweet Biscuits – Dogs should not eat too much sugar, so these are bad for dogs.
  • Arrowroot Biscuits – Yes, this flour is safe for dogs to eat.
  • Shortbread Biscuits – Dogs can have a few in small amounts.
  • Biscotti – It is fine as long as it is made with simple ingredients. Do not let dogs eat cocoa powder or chocolate.

Can Dogs Eat Biscuits and Gravy

Since dogs shouldn’t eat dairy products, it’s best not to give them biscuits with country gravy. This is a good rule to follow, especially if you don’t know if your pup is lactose intolerant.

The fat in sausage gravy could also contribute to high blood pressure. It’s just a good idea not to share biscuits and gravy with your dog.

Can Dogs Eat Cat Biscuits

This is a surprisingly common question! A lot of experts agree that cat treats won’t hurt your dog if they eat them.

It’s always better to give your pup dog treats since they are made with your dog’s nutritional needs in mind. But small quantities of cat treats won’t hurt dogs.

Can Humans Eat Dog Biscuits

Yes, humans can eat dog treats! They are usually made without sugar and a lot less salt, so they probably won’t taste very good. But will it hurt you to eat them? Probably not.

Here’s the catch. Check out my extensive list of dog treat recipes. All of them are made with whole ingredients that you might eat in different recipes. They are safe for you to eat but probably taste too bland to be enjoyable.

Best Biscuits For Dog

The best biscuits for dogs are ones that you make homemade, with ingredients that are good for them. My dogs love it when I make them peanut butter dog biscuits.

Another popular homemade biscuit recipe that my dogs love is a banana dog treat. They love how naturally sweet it is.

The best option is to make the biscuits at home with healthy ingredients. Then there are more health benefits for the dog.

In fact, these treats can be used to reward good behavior in your pup.

Dog Treats That Are Bad For Dogs

If your dog has health problems, you want to make sure you give them treats that won’t worsen their problems.

Grubbly Farms created a helpful list of harmful ingredients that are commonly found in commercial dog treats. Avoid the following ingredients:

  • Preservatives
  • Soybean or Corn fillers
  • Refined and Artificial Sugar
  • Animal Byproducts
  • Artificial Dyes
  • Excess Sodium

Final Thoughts

As you can see, large quantities of carbs and sugar are bad for dogs to eat. It’s better for dogs to eat real meat and dog-safe vegetables than to consume grains and sugar. Yes, dogs can eat a few bites of biscuits, but they shouldn’t make up a bulk of their calories.
