Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

These salmon treats are simple, satisfying, and perfect for all kinds of pups. Here’s why they deserve a spot in your dog treat rotation:

They’re easy to make. Just mix, roll, and bake. That’s it! No complicated steps or fancy equipment needed.

They use wholesome ingredients. You’ll find no fillers or mystery additives here, just simple, dog-safe ingredients you can feel good about.

Dogs love the taste. Salmon is packed with flavor, and dogs absolutely love it (mine sure do!), especially when it’s baked into a soft, chewy treat.

They make great training treats. These soft, savory bites are easy to break into smaller pieces, making them perfect for rewarding good behavior.

They’re a great option for dogs with food allergies. If your dog is sensitive to common proteins like chicken or beef, salmon is a great alternative!

Ingredients

You only need a handful of simple, nutritious ingredients to make this salmon dog treats recipe:

  • Canned salmon – A convenient source of protein and healthy fats.
  • Brown rice flour – A gentle, gluten-free flour that gives the treats structure.
  • Oat flour – Adds fiber and keeps the treats soft and chewy.
  • Egg – Binds the dough together and adds protein.
  • Fresh curly parsley – A dog-safe herb that adds freshness and may help with bad breath. It’s an excellent source of vitamins and minerals too.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Want to make a few changes or use what you have on hand? Here are some handy tips:

Avoid flat-leaf (Italian) parsley because it contains compounds that can irritate your dog’s skin. Use curly parsley instead, or substitute with dog-safe herbs like rosemary.

No canned salmon? Canned tuna works too, or you can use cooked fresh salmon.

Need flour alternatives? You can make your own oat or brown rice flour by blending old-fashioned oats or uncooked brown rice in a food processor or blender until it reaches a flour-like consistency.

Do not use coconut flour. It absorbs too much moisture and your dough won’t hold together.

How to Make Salmon Dog Treats

Ready to get baking? This salmon dog treat recipe comes together in just a few simple steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the canned salmon (with juice), both flours, and the egg. Mix until well combined.
  3. Stir in the chopped curly parsley.
  4. Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into balls.
  5. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, spaced slightly apart.
  6. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until firm and golden on the outside.
  7. Let the treats cool completely before serving.

Recipe Tips for Success

Adjust the size: Make smaller or larger treats depending on your dog’s size. Just keep in mind that smaller treats will bake faster, and larger ones may need a few extra minutes in the oven.

Make salmon patties: Instead of balls, flatten the dough to create little patties for a fun twist.

Use silicone molds: For extra cuteness or themed shapes, press the dough into silicone molds before baking (just be sure they’re oven-safe).

For softer treats, bake on the lower end of the time range. For crunchier treats, go a few minutes longer.

Serving Size

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. If your dog hasn’t tried salmon, brown rice flour, or oat flour before, start with just one treat to make sure they don’t have any sensitivities.

If you’re not sure how many treats are appropriate for your dog, especially if they’re watching their weight or have health concerns, check in with your vet.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Once cooled, store your salmon dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze them! Here’s how:

  1. Place the cooled treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet with space between each one.
  2. Freeze until solid.
  3. Transfer the frozen treats to a freezer-safe bag or container.
  4. Thaw them overnight in the fridge before serving. They’ll last up to 3 months frozen.

Can people eat homemade salmon dog treats?

Yes, they’re made with all human-safe ingredients! These baked salmon dog treats are similar to salmon patties but without any seasonings, so they might taste a little plain. Feel free to give one a nibble if you’re curious!

Benefits of Salmon for Dogs

Salmon isn’t just delicious, it’s also super nutritious for your pup. It’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support healthy skin and a shiny coat. It’s also packed with protein, helps reduce inflammation, and may even improve cognitive function in older dogs. As long as it’s cooked properly and served without added seasonings, salmon is a fantastic choice for dogs.

You can use almond flour – just note that it will make them high in fat and calories. You may want to try half tapioca flour and almond flour.
