If you’re eating a bowl of it for breakfast, can you share it with your dog? Can dogs eat muesli? Read this guide to find out.
Are you having trouble finding reliable information about food dogs can eat? I get it. There is so much information out there, and a lot of it is opinions from other well-meaning pet parents. So, I created this guide with other dog owners in mind.
For ultimate pet safety, I recommend consulting with your vet about all the questions you have about your dog eating muesli.
What Is Muesli
I’ve shared information before about dogs eating breakfast cereals. Well, muesli is a European cereal. It’s kinda like our version of granola, but there are some differences.
It was created in the 1800s in Switzerland as containing the ideal combination of whole foods. It is made with grains, nuts, fruit, and even some vegetables. Today, muesli is sold with a bunch of different types of foods in it.
You’ll see muesli eaten as a cereal, an ingredient in bread and cookies, and even enjoyed in energy bites.
What’s it made of? Well, that depends on the brand. Most brands are made with whole grain wheat, oats, dried fruit, and other healthy ingredients.
Muesli vs Granola
So, is muesli the same thing as granola? No, not exactly. Granola is made with added sugar and flavorings. Take a look at the cereal aisle and you’ll see chocolate granola, vanilla granola, and even peanut butter granola and sugary granola bars.
Muesli is different. It’s made without any added sugar or extra flavorings. If it is sold with flavorings, the flavor comes from the food, like almonds and cranberries in an almond cranberry flavor.
People love it because it’s sold as a health food that can support things like weight loss, glowing skin, more energy, and better sleep.
But what about dogs? Can dogs eat it?
Can Dogs Eat It?
Yes, dogs can safely eat muesli in small amounts as long as it does not contain any food that’s toxic to dogs. Always check the ingredients list before sharing muesli with your dog.
What To Watch Out For
So, if it’s so nutritious, are there any dangers of muesli? Yes, there are some things you should watch out for, especially with your dog.
Always scan the ingredient label and make sure you don’t give your dog any varieties that might contain potentially toxic ingredients.
It’s also best not to give your dog anything with added sugar or sugar substitutes – especially xylitol.
It’s also best to keep your dog away from macadamia nuts.
If the muesli contains raisins, don’t let your dog eat that either.
Be careful with any varieties that contain too much sugar from dried fruit. Dried fruit can stick to your dog’s teeth, causing cavities. And too much sugar – even from fruit – can cause your dog to gain weight.
Food Allergies
Since muesli contains nuts and seeds, be aware of the danger of food allergies, too.
If your dog has food sensitivities or allergies, talk to your veterinarian before feeding them muesli. It might be a problem if your dog is allergic to tree nuts.
And some varieties contain wheat, too. Do not give it to your dog if they are sensitive or allergic to gluten.
Muesli Nutrition
Since it’s made without added flavors or sugar, muesli could be a nutritious snack for healthy dogs that don’t have any food allergies.
I’ll go over some of the more general nutrition information since the specifics will change depending on which brand or flavor you have.
Fiber
Most types of muesli are made with whole grain oats and wheat. Fiber – in small amounts – is good for your dog’s gut health. Just be careful because too much fiber could give your dog an upset stomach.
High Protein
Dogs need to eat a lot of protein to maintain strong muscles and a healthy body. It also gives them a natural source of energy, too.
Most types of muesli contain nuts and seeds, which are good sources of plant-based protein.
Essential Minerals
Look at all the health-boosting minerals that are in most types of muesli:
- Calcium – This is good for helping to build strong bones.
- Iron – This is fantastic for anemic dogs and helping with enzyme functions.
- Potassium – This is good for strong bones and boosting metabolism.
- Vitamin C – This supports your dog’s immune system.
- Healthy Fats – This is good for brain health.
- Amino Acids – This is good for building lean muscles.
How Much Can Dogs Eat
Since the biggest danger of eating muesli is the high calories and possible weight gain, there isn’t really a level that is defined as too much for dogs.
Again, read the ingredients before sharing it with your dog. Don’t give your dog too many carbs or sugar.
When we think about what our dog eats, it all depends on their size and what else they ate that day. Most of your dog’s calories must come from animal protein and vegetables. Grains like wheat or oats are safe (and even nutritious) for dogs, but they should play a supporting role and not make up most of their diet.
How To Give Muesli To Dogs
The best way to give muesli to dogs is to make a dog-safe granola at home.
I have a homemade granola for dog recipe that your dog will love! It’s nutritious and easy to make, and you will know that everything in it is safe for them to eat.
Final Thoughts
Whether your dog eats a grain-free diet or you just want to give them more whole grains, a little bit of muesli is a fantastic source of dietary fiber. It’s a great dog food topper. Just be careful with how much they eat – small amounts are as safe.
