Can Dogs Eat Cockles?

They are delightful seafood for humans and there are lots of ways to eat them. Can dogs eat cockles? Let’s take a closer look at them and see how safe or dangerous they are.

What Are Cockles

Cockles have sweet, tender meat that doesn’t have the brininess of clams. They are an edible mollusk that lives on sandy, sheltered beaches around the world. They have a heart-shaped shell that distinguishes them from other shellfish.

They add a delicate flavor to pasta and rice dishes. If you live anywhere near a beach, chances are you have access to eating cockles.

Cockles and Mussels

Are cockles the same as mussels? No, the only similarity is that they both live in shells.

The shells look nothing alike. There are freshwater and saltwater mussels, but cockles live in sandy beaches near saltwater.

Cockles Vs Clams

Both clams and cockles are considered mollusks – an invertebrate animal that lives in a shell.

Clams are bivalve mollusks. This means there are two shelves that are connected together. There are both hard shell and softshell clams and not all clams are edible.

Cockles look very similar to clams. They are also a bivalve mollusk – two shells joined together. The difference is in their shape and flavor. Cockles have a heart-shaped shell and a much milder flavor. Most people who don’t like the taste of clams will enjoy eating cockles.

Cockles Whelks and Winkles

Two other types of seafood that are often compared to cockles are whelks and winkles.

Whelks are known as gastropods. They only have one shell and it is a beautiful cone-shaped one. It is known as a sea snail. They taste sweet and are often compared to scallops. They are carnivores and actually eat cockles.

Periwinkles are called winkles for short. This is the name of a small, edible whelk. It is native to the rocky shores of the northeastern and northwestern Atlantic ocean.

Boiling them changes their texture a bit but they are completely safe to feed to your dog this way. Make sure they are completely cooked and don’t serve it to your dog with the shell.
