Why You Will Love This Recipe

There’s something so fun about baking treats for your pup, especially when the recipe is this easy and the results are so tail-waggingly good! Here’s why these ground turkey dog treats will be a go-to in your kitchen:

Easy to make – Mix up a simple dough, spoon it into silicone molds, and bake. That’s it! No rolling, cutting, or complicated steps.

Wholesome ingredients – Every ingredient is chosen with your dog in mind. There are no weird additives or preservatives. Just real food your pup can enjoy.

Perfect for Thanksgiving – Pumpkin and turkey? Total holiday vibes! These treats are a festive way to include your dog in the holiday fun.

Simple to customize – Want to swap in sweet potato or add some cranberries? You totally can! Make it your own (or your dog’s!).

They freeze beautifully – Bake a batch now, freeze for later, and you’ll always have treats on hand when those puppy eyes strike.

Ingredients and What They Bring to the Treats

Just a handful of ingredients go into these dog-friendly treats, and each one contributes to the treat’s yumminess and nutritiousness. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Ground turkey – A lean protein source with essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Pumpkin puree – Great for digestion and adds natural moisture and nutrients.
  • Egg – Helps bind everything together and adds a bit of protein.
  • Oat flour – A gentle, gluten-free flour that’s perfect for dogs.
  • Old-fashioned rolled oats – Add texture and fiber for a satisfying bite.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making these treats, there are a few important things to know and a few simple swaps if needed:

  • Skip the pumpkin pie mix. It often has spices like nutmeg, which can be toxic to dogs.
  • Want to go the homemade route? Make your own dog-safe pumpkin puree.
  • Oat flour hack: No need to buy it. Just blitz old-fashioned oats in a blender or food processor until fine.
  • No oat flour? You can use rice flour, all-purpose flour, or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour if your dog isn’t sensitive to wheat.
  • Avoid coconut flour. It absorbs too much moisture and will make the treats dry and crumbly.

Equipment Needed

You likely have most of the kitchen items you need for making the treats. You can use any silicone candy molds, but dog treat silicone molds make them super cute.

How to Make Turkey Dog Treats

Making these treats is super easy! Here’s how:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the oat flour and rolled oats.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, pumpkin puree, and egg.
  4. Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and stir until fully combined.
  5. Spoon the dough into silicone molds. Place the molds on a baking sheet for support.
  6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cooked through.
  7. Let the treats cool completely before removing them from the molds.

Recipe Variations for More Flavor

The best part of homemade dog treats? You can switch things up to fit the season or your dog’s taste buds!

  • Turkey and Cranberry Dog Treats – Add 1 cup of fresh or frozen cranberries for a sweet-tart twist.
  • Turkey and Sweet Potato Dog Treats – Swap the pumpkin puree for plain mashed sweet potatoes.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Since these treats are made with meat, you’ll want to keep them chilled:

  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to 4 months. Let them thaw in the fridge or serve as a frozen treat!

Can People Eat These Treats?

Yes! Every ingredient is safe for humans. So go ahead and try one if you’re curious. Just don’t be surprised if your dog tries to steal it back.
