The Best Things About Homemade Donuts for Dogs
Have you ever sat down with a donut, only to have your four-legged friend beg with those sad little eyes? When you have a batch of these doggie donuts on hand, you can give your pup their own treat that is made just for them.
Giving your pet a dog donut makes it feel like they are sharing treat time with you and they’ll be oblivious to how these donuts have lots of vitamins, nutrients, and fiber that’s great for dogs.
Benefits of Apples for Dogs
Apples have vitamin C which will boost your pet’s immune system. They are also a fantastic source of fiber, which will help them stay regular. They also add natural sweetness.
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make the donuts and a little about each one:
- Brown Rice Flour – This is the best gluten-free flour that maintains the shape without falling apart.
- Baking Soda – This gives the donuts a light texture. They would be very dense without it.
- Apple – Any type of apple will work in this recipe. Use whatever variety you have on hand.
- Applesauce – Always use unsweetened applesauce so that it doesn’t add any extra calories or sugar.
- Banana – Since you will be mixing it into the batter, make sure the banana is very ripe.
- Coconut Oil – This gives the donuts some healthy fats.
- Egg – Binds the dough and adds protein.

For the icing, you’ll need:
- Greek Yogurt – Use unsweetened Greek yogurt. It has lots of protein and calcium.
- Peanut Butter – Natural creamy peanut butter is the healthiest choice. If your pup is allergic to peanuts, use almond butter or sunflower seed butter.
Ingredient Notes
When you make this recipe, here are a few notes to keep in mind.
To make your own brown rice flour, add 2 cups of uncooked brown rice to a blender or food processor. Blend until it has a powder consistency.
Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol. It is a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. It is best to use natural unsweetened peanut butter.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make doggy donuts. The only special one is a Donut Pan.

- In a large bowl, mix together the egg, applesauce, mashed banana, coconut oil, and chopped apple.

- Place the batter into donut pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
- Transfer the baked donuts to a wire rack to cool.
- Combine the peanut butter with yogurt to make the icing. Spread it on top of the donuts. You can also crumble a donut or dog treats for a topping on the icing.

You can use this same batter to make air fryer dog treats.
Serving Size
How many homemade dog donuts should you give your dog at once? One is plenty. Definitely a portion of one for smaller dogs. These donuts are large so be mindful of how much you give to your dog.
Dogs shouldn’t overeat. They should not consume too many carbs or calories. It is important to keep dogs at a healthy weight. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one per day.
How to Store Dog Donuts
How you store this dog donut treat depends on how you made them – with or without icing.
If you put icing on top of your homemade dog donuts, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. The Greek yogurt needs to be refrigerated. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Baked dog donuts without icing should be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature. They will stay fresh this way for about a week.
Can people eat these donuts?
Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients in these donuts for dogs are safe for human consumption. They’re great for folks watching their sugar intake. Give one a try and you might like it.

This is amazing, thank you! Do you think it would be possible to omit or substitute the coconut oil in order to make the recipe more pancreatitis-friendly? Any suggestions for a lower fat alternative to oil? Thank you 🙂
You can omit the oil and use more applesauce or mashed banana in place of it.
I have read that Baking soda and baking powder are toxic to dogs.
Baking soda and baking powder can be harmful if consumed in large quantities (over 22 grams per pound of body weight). The very small amount in these donuts is fine.
