The Best Things About Donuts for Dogs
Have you ever sat down with a donut, only to have your four-legged friend beg with those sad little eyes? When you have a batch of these doggie donuts on-hand, you can give Fido their own treat that is made just for them.
Not only does giving your pet a dog donut make it feel like they are sharing treat time with you, but they are actually good for your puppy too. This dog donut recipe is made with apples, bananas, and brown rice flour – all of which are fantastic for your pet’s health.
Benefits of Apples
This apple dog treat recipe is full of nutrients. Apples have vitamin C which will boost your pet’s immune system. They are also a fantastic source of fiber, which will help them stay regular.
Another wonderful thing about apples in this baked dog treat recipe is that they add natural sweetness without needing to add any sugar or sweetener.
Benefits of Bananas
Bananas are another ingredient in this dog treat recipe. They are really high in potassium, which fortifies their muscles and is fantastic for their heart health.
They also make the donuts taste sweet without increasing the calorie amounts too much. Plus, they have plenty of fiber in them too.
Benefits of Brown Rice Flour
Brown rice is the other main component that makes up these dog treat ingredients. Normally you want to keep your pet away from rice or rice flour because it has too many carbs. However, it is one of the healthiest ingredients to use in dog donuts treats.
This is a healthy alternative for dogs that are allergic to wheat flour or gluten. It’s gluten-free and won’t negatively impact your dog’s glucose levels too much.
Doggie Donuts Recipe Ingredients
The entire list of ingredients and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. First, I want to share some additional information about the ingredients I used in this doggie donuts recipe.
Here’s a list of what you need. If you want to make organic dog donuts you must use organic ingredients.
- Brown Rice Flour – This is the best gluten-free flour that maintains the shape without falling apart.
- Baking Soda – This gives the donut dog treats a light texture. Without it, they will be very dense.
- Apple – Any type of apples will work in this recipe. Use whatever variety you have on hand.
- Applesauce – Always use unsweetened applesauce so that it doesn’t add any extra calories or sugar.
- Banana – Since you will be mixing it into the batter, make sure the banana is very ripe.
- Coconut Oil – This gives the gourmet dog treat some healthy fats. You can use avocado oil instead if you don’t have coconut oil.
- Egg -Any sized egg will work perfectly in this recipe.
If you want to make dog treat icing, you’ll need:
- Greek Yogurt – Use unsweetened Greek yogurt. It has lots of protein and calcium.
- Peanut Butter – Natural creamy peanut butter is the healthiest choice. If your pup is allergic to peanuts, use any type of nut or seed butter – like sun butter.
Ingredient Notes
When you make this easy dog treats recipe, here are a few notes to keep in mind.
To make your own brown rice flour, add 2 cups of uncooked brown rice to a blender or food processor. Blend until it has a powder consistency.
Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol. It is a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. It is best to use natural unsweetened peanut butter.
Serving Size
How many homemade dog donuts should you give your dog at once? One is plenty. Definitely a portion of one for smaller dogs. These donuts are large so be mindful of how much you give to your dog.
Dogs shouldn’t overeat. They should not consume too many carbs or calories. It is important to keep dogs at a healthy weight. For this reason, I suggest only giving your spoiled hound one per day.
Equipment Needed
You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make doggy donuts. But just in case, here’s a list of them:
- Measuring Cups
- Mixing Bowls
- Mixing Spoon
- Donut Pan
- Wire Cooling Rack
How to Make Dog Donuts
These are the recipe steps and photos of the process for making the donuts. I hope they help you make this healthy doggie donuts recipe!
You can scroll down to the bottom of this article for a printable recipe card.
- In a medium bowl, combine the rice flour with the baking soda.
- Mash the banana, chop the apple, and melt the coconut oil.
- In a large bowl, mix together the egg, applesauce, mashed banana, coconut oil, and chopped apple.
- Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredient mixture.
- Mix until well combined. If the batter seems dry or the dry ingredients don’t get incorporated, add a small amount of water to the batter and continue mixing.
- Place the batter into donut pans.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
- Transfer the baked donuts to a wire rack to cool.
- Combine the peanut butter with yogurt to make the icing. Spread it on top of the donuts. You can also crumble a donut or dog treats to for a topping on the icing.
You can use this same batter to make air fryer dog treats.
How to Store Dog Donuts
How you store this dog donut treat depends on how you made them – with or without icing.
If you put icing on top of your homemade dog donuts, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. The Greek yogurt needs to be refrigerated. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Baked dog donuts without icing should be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature. They will stay fresh this way for about a week.
Can humans eat these dog donuts?
Oh yes, they sure can! All the ingredients in these donuts for dogs are safe for human consumption. But people probably won’t like them because they are not sweet. I suggest making some baked apple donuts for people.

This is amazing, thank you! Do you think it would be possible to omit or substitute the coconut oil in order to make the recipe more pancreatitis-friendly? Any suggestions for a lower fat alternative to oil? Thank you 🙂
Renee Dobbs says
You can omit the oil and use more applesauce or mashed banana in place of it.
Judy says
I have read that Baking soda and baking powder are toxic to dogs.
Renee Dobbs says
Baking soda and baking powder can be harmful if consumed in large quantities (over 22 grams per pound of body weight). The very small amount in these donuts is fine.
