Why This Frozen Yogurt Dog Treat Recipe is the Best

When the sun is hot and awful, a frozen treat is a great way to hydrate your pup and help them cool down.

These DIY frozen dog treats are one of my favorite ice cream alternatives for dogs. They are delicious and good for both you and your fur baby.

Making healthy frozen dog treats has never been easier. There are just a few simple ingredients and all you do is combine them in molds, freeze them, and then they are ready to eat.

Sometimes it can be tough to find frozen dog treats without peanut butter, but when you make them homemade, all of the guess and worry is gone. These healthy treats are perfect for dogs with food sensitivities.

They are naturally sweetened with fruit so there’s no need to be concerned about a sweet treat with added sugar or artificial sweeteners that may be toxic to dogs.

Benefits of Yogurt for Dogs

These homemade treats are made with yogurt, which is really good for your dog. Not only is it high in calcium (great for your pup’s bones), but it is a great source of protein too! Protein is essential for healthy muscles.

In fact, when you give your dog a tasty treat made with yogurt, you are also giving them live cultures that act as probiotics that are good for your dog’s digestive system.

Benefits of Berries and Watermelon for Dogs

It’s best for your pup to get all their nutrition from their dog food, but these treats are a fun way to eat a few more vitamins.

Berries are full of vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. If your dog hasn’t eaten a berry before, I suggest only giving them a few for the first time. They will probably be able to eat berries without any issues, but it is always a great idea to watch just in case.

Watermelon has essential vitamins for the immune system including vitamin A, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. It also has potassium and magnesium which are both great for a dog’s health. This delicious fruit has high water content (92 percent water) and a low-calorie density.

Recipe Ingredients

There are only natural ingredients in these frozen yogurt treats for dogs. Everything is easy to find at the grocery store. In fact, you might already have everything in your refrigerator.

Here’s the list of what you need:

  • Blueberries – Fresh or frozen
  • Strawberries – Fresh or frozen
  • Raspberries – Fresh or frozen
  • Watermelon – Flesh only, no seeds or rind
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Use low-fat or fat-free. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis or upset stomachs.

Do not use yogurt that contains xylitol, a sweetener toxic to dogs.

Ingredient Substitutions

When you make these small treats, there are a few different ingredient swaps you can make.

You can substitute Greek yogurt with lite coconut milk if you want dairy-free frozen dog treats.

You can also substitute the berries with any fruit dogs can eat. Here are some ideas:

  • Apple
  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Pineapple

Only want to use one fruit instead of a combination? That’s great! Just use 1 cup of one fruit to make:

  • Blueberry Yogurt Dog Treats
  • Raspberry Yogurt Dog Treats
  • Strawberry Yogurt Dog Treats
  • Watermelon Yogurt Dog Treats

Frozen Fruit Dog Treats

A frozen yogurt treat with fruit is a great option on a hot summer day because it helps your pet cool down and stay hydrated.

If your dog likes Frosty Paws, then they will love these too! They will love these puppy pops!

Serving Size

The recipe will yield approximately 50 treats when made using small bone-shaped and paw print molds. That equates to about 10 calories for one treat.

The serving amount can vary depending on the size of your dog and how many calories per day you feed your dog between dog food and treats. Big dogs can consume more calories than smaller dogs.

Also, yogurt contains lactose, and dogs are not designed to digest lactose. Too much can cause gas, diarrhea, and vomiting. The best choice is to give a small amount and see if your dog has any adverse reactions. Then use your own judgment on how many to give your dog at once.

I recommend giving a small dog only one of these frozen treats and up to 3 for larger dogs.

Equipment Needed

This is what I used to make these DIY frozen dog treats. They made the entire process a breeze.

  • Liquid Measuring Cup
  • Dry Measuring Cups
  • Small Silicone Dog Treat Molds or Small Ice Cube Trays

You can also use basic ice cube trays, small paper cups, or plastic shot glasses to make the treats.

How Long Do Frozen Dog Treats Last?

These homemade frozen yogurt dog treats will last up to 4 months in the freezer. Make a big batch of yogurt ice cubes for dogs and let them eat them all summer.

Can Humans Eat These Frozen Yogurt Dog Treats?

Yes, absolutely! Make a double batch so you have some for people and some for dogs. Use silicone molds in different shapes when making the ones for people. This way, everyone will know the bone or paw-shaped ones are for dogs.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Plain Greek Yogurt
  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ cup Strawberries
  • ½ cup Blueberries
  • ½ cup Raspberries
  • ½ cup Watermelon

Instructions

  • Cut the strawberries and watermelon into small pieces. Remove any watermelon seeds.
  • Place the yogurt and water in a small bowl and stir to combine. This thins out the yogurt.
  • Fill each mold compartment halfway up with the thinned yogurt.
  • Add as many pieces of fruit that will fit into the mold
  • Fill up the remaining space with yogurt.
  • Continue this process for each type of fruit. You can combine berries for a mixed berry flavor.
  • Freeze for approximately 1 hour or until frozen solid.

Notes

Store the treats in a plastic freezer bag or airtight container in the freezer for up to 4 months.
You can use fresh or frozen berries, but do not use frozen berries in sugar or syrup. You will need to thaw the strawberries in order to chop them into smaller pieces.
