Chicken soup is known for its health benefits for humans and it’s the same for dogs. Here are some of them:

• Chicken soup contains a lot of water, which can help keep dogs hydrated and maintain their electrolyte balance. This can be especially important for dogs who are sick or dehydrated.
• Chicken soup is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that dogs need to stay healthy.
• Chicken soup may also help support digestive health in dogs. The broth is easy for dogs to digest, and the vegetables provide fiber to aid in digestion.
• Some research suggests that chicken soup may have immune-boosting properties, which could help dogs fight off infections and illnesses.
• For dogs who have lost their appetite due to illness or other issues, the aroma and taste of chicken soup can help stimulate their appetite and encourage them to eat.

This is because chicken soup for humans contains too much salt for dogs. Canned soup has a lot of salt and preservatives, and dogs that eat too much salt are at risk of getting salt poisoning.

Soup for humans, either canned or homemade, may also contain spices or other ingredients that are toxic to dogs. Remember, even small portions of garlic or onion could make your dog sick.

That’s why homemade soup for dogs is such a good thing. You can control the ingredients so it’s safe and healthy for your furry friend.

Why This is the Best Chicken Soup for Dogs Recipe

This chicken soup recipe uses simple and natural ingredients and dog-friendly veggies. It’s packed with amino acids and other health benefits (which I’ll explain below). Plus, it’s easy to make and customize.

You can even make your own bone broth with different types of bones (as long as you remove them before giving the soup to your dog).

Ingredients

The entire ingredient list, quantities of each, and the step-by-step directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, I want to share some additional information about the ingredients I used in this soup for dogs:

• Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs are a great source of protein.
• Carrot is a healthy vegetable with vitamin A, beta-carotene, and fiber.
• Celery has fiber, vitamins A, C, and K, folate, potassium, and manganese.
• Fresh Curly Parsley has vitamins A and K, and is rich in folic acids and antioxidants.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

• Chicken – You can use any chicken cuts to make the soup, including using boneless chicken breast and chicken liver. You can use chicken with bones; just remember to remove and discard the bones because cooked chicken bones are not safe for dogs to eat.
• Herbs – You can use any dog-safe herbs in the soup. Rosemary or mint are good choices.
• Vegetables – You can use any dog-safe vegetables in the soup. Green beans, potatoes, or sweet potatoes are great ones to use.
• Water – Use bone broth for dogs for a richer flavor and additional nutrients.

Be sure to use curly parsley and not Italian flat leaf parsley. And, yes, I know flat leaf is in the photos – it was a mistake.

How to Make Chicken Soup for Dogs

These are the recipe steps and photos of the process of making the soup. I hope they help you make this recipe. You can scroll down to the bottom of this article for a printable recipe card.

1. Chop celery, carrot, and parsley into small pieces.
2. Put the raw chicken, chopped vegetables, and parsley in a pot.

3. Cover the chicken and veggies with water.

4. Bring it to a boil then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook until the chicken is done. It will take about 30 minutes.

5. Remove the chicken from the pot and cut it into small pieces or shred it.

6. Return the chicken pieces to the pot and stir them into the soup.

7. Remove the soup from the heat and allow the soup to cool until it is slightly warm or at room temperature before serving it to your dog.

If desired, you can puree vegetables in a blender with some of the broth then pour the puree mixture back into the pot.

Do not give hot soup to your dog and risk burning your dog’s mouth or tongue.

Recipe Variations

• Chicken Noodle Soup for Dogs – Cook ½ cup of fine egg noodles without salt according to the package directions. Add the cooked noodles to the soup.
• Chicken and Rice Soup for Dogs – Cook ½ cup of plain white rice or brown rice without salt according to the package directions. Add the cooked rice to the soup.

Serving Size and Tips

How much homemade chicken soup to give your dog depends on the size of the dog. Generally, a serving for a medium-sized dog would be 1 cup.

Use your own judgment or your vet’s advice on how much to give your dog, especially if giving this soup to a sick dog.

Sick dogs with an upset stomach or diarrhea may need only the broth at first and then slowly include small portions of the chicken and vegetables in the serving.

If your dog has digestive problems or cannot handle solid foods, try pureeing the soup in a blender or food processor. Pureed soup may be easier on a dog’s gastrointestinal tract.

Any new food should be introduced slowly and in small amounts to help ensure it does not upset the dog’s stomach. Please check with your veterinarian before making any significant changes to your dog’s diet.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat

Store the soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Freeze portions of the soup in freezer-safe containers or plastic freezer bags for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

Freezing Tip: Freeze the soup in ice cube trays for a tasty frozen treat.

You don’t really need to reheat the soup for dogs. But if you want to, you can reheat the soup in a pan on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave. Do not get the soup hot – room temperature or slightly warm is best.

Ingredients

• 1 Carrot

• 2-3 stems Fresh Curly Parsley (do not use flat leaf parsley)
