Ingredients and What They Bring to the Pupcakes

These carrot cupcakes for dogs are made with simple, wholesome ingredients you might already have in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need:

For the cupcakes:

  • Shredded Carrots – Naturally sweet and full of fiber and nutrients.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Adds protein and moisture without added sugar.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – Acts as a natural sweetener and helps bind the batter.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – Delicious and packed with healthy fats and protein. Dogs love it!
  • Egg – Helps everything come together while adding protein.
  • Oat Flour – A gentle, gluten-free flour option that’s easy to digest.
  • Baking Powder and Baking Soda – Give the pupcakes a light rise and fluffy texture.

For the frosting and topping:

  • Plain Greek Yogurt – The creamy base for a dog-friendly frosting.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – Adds flavor and richness.
  • Crushed Dog Biscuits – A fun and crunchy topping to finish things off.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

When making this dog friendly carrot cake recipe, there are a few important things to keep in mind and simple swaps you can make:

  • Do not use peanut butter that contains xylitol, an artificial sweetener toxic to dogs.
  • You can substitute applesauce with mashed banana or plain pumpkin puree.
  • Baking powder and baking soda are safe for dogs in small amounts. (Source)
  • You can substitute peanut butter with almond butter or sunflower seed butter (xylitol-free).
  • You can make oat flour by blending old-fashioned rolled oats in a blender or food processor until it has a flour consistency. One cup of oats makes about 3/4 cup of flour.
  • You can substitute oat flour with brown rice flour by blending uncooked brown rice.
  • You can also use all-purpose flour or a 50-50 combination of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. Because whole wheat flour is denser, it’s not a great substitute to use by itself.

How to Make Carrot Pupcakes

Making carrot cupcakes for dogs is just like making them for people. It’s quick, easy, and satisfying. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners or grease the pan well.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together yogurt, applesauce, peanut butter, shredded carrots, and egg.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine oat flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the 12 muffin cups.
  6. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cupcakes from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack.

Recipe Tips for Success

Here are a few tips to help your carrot pupcakes come out perfectly every time:

  • Finely grate carrots using the smallest holes in a box grater. It helps distribute the carrots evenly and contributes to a smoother, uniform texture.
  • Grating fresh carrots is better than using pre-shredded carrots because freshly grated carrots retain more moisture and flavor.
  • Let all your ingredients come to room temperature before mixing.
  • Don’t overmix the batter. It can lead to dense cupcakes.
  • Don’t overbake. They’re done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.
  • Remove the cupcake liners before serving to your dog, or skip the liners entirely and bake directly in a greased pan.

Make Them Your Own With These Recipe Variations

Want to give these dog carrot cake cupcakes a fun twist? Try one of these easy variations:

  • Add a tablespoon of honey for a touch of natural sweetness.
  • Add a teaspoon of cinnamon for extra flavor.
  • Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting: Combine 8 ounces of softened cream cheese with ½ cup of creamy peanut butter.
  • Top with a sprinkle of shredded carrots instead of crushed dog biscuits.
  • Use a carrot stick as a fun “candle” for birthday pupcakes.
  • Mini pupcakes: Use a mini muffin tin and reduce baking time to about 10 minutes.

How to Store the Cupcakes and How Long They Last

Store the pupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They’ll stay fresh for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze them in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months. To prevent them from sticking together, freeze them on a baking sheet first, then transfer them to your container or bag. You can also individually wrap them for convenience. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

Can people eat these cupcakes?

Yes! These carrot pupcakes are made with human-safe ingredients. There’s no added sugar, so they’re not super sweet, but they make a great option for anyone cutting back on sugar. Give one a taste and you might be surprised!
