Why You and Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

They’re easy to make. With just a few basic steps, you’ll have a whole batch of fresh, homemade dog treats ready to go.

Made with wholesome ingredients. There’s no artificial stuff or mystery ingredients – just real, good food.

Less expensive than store-bought treats. Save money while giving your pup something even better than what you’ll find in stores.

Simple to customize. Whether you switch up the fruit or change the flour, this recipe is super flexible.

Crunchy texture dogs love. These treats bake up nice and crisp, which dogs love to crunch on. And that crunchy texture can even help keep their teeth clean!

Perfect for all seasons. Pumpkin isn’t just for fall, these treats are great year-round!

Ingredients

You only need 4 simple pantry staples to whip up these tasty treats:

  • Ripe banana – Naturally sweet and full of fiber and potassium.
  • Pumpkin puree – Loaded with fiber and great for digestion.
  • Egg – Helps bind everything together and adds a little protein boost.
  • Oat flour – A gluten-free, gentle flour perfect for homemade dog treats.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

This recipe is super flexible, so you can easily adjust it based on what you have at home:

No pumpkin puree? Use plain mashed sweet potato or butternut squash instead.

Want homemade pumpkin puree? Check out my pumpkin puree for dogs recipe!

No ripe banana? Substitute with store-bought or homemade unsweetened applesauce.

Need oat flour? Make it by blending uncooked old-fashioned oats until they reach a flour-like consistency. 1 cup of oats makes about ¾ cup of flour.

Other flour options: You can use all-purpose flour or a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour. (Note: whole wheat alone is too dense.) Do not use coconut flour because it absorbs too much moisture and will make the dough dry and crumbly.

Equipment Needed

You probably have most of the kitchen items you need to make these homemade banana pumpkin dog treats. You can use any cookie cutter, but dog bone cookie cutters make them so cute.

How to Make Banana Pumpkin Dog Treats

These treats come together quickly with just a few easy steps. Here’s what to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Mash the ripe banana in a medium bowl.
  3. Add the pumpkin and egg to the mashed banana and mix until well combined.
  4. Stir in the oat flour and mix well to form a dough.
  5. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the dough until about ⅓ inch thick.
  6. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, and place the cutouts on your prepared baking sheet.
  7. Re-roll any leftover dough and continue cutting until it’s all used.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the treats are golden and firm.
  9. Transfer the baked treats to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before serving.

Recipe Variation – Dog Treats Baked in Molds

Don’t feel like rolling and cutting dough? No problem!

  1. Press the dough into silicone molds.
  2. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
  3. Let them cool and then pop them out of the molds.

Serving Size

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain a balanced diet. If you’re unsure how many treats your dog can safely enjoy, a quick chat with your vet is always a good idea!

When introducing new ingredients, always start with just one treat to make sure your pup doesn’t have any sensitivities.

How to Store the Treats and How Long They Last

Store the treats in an airtight container. They will last about 5 days at room temperature or up to 1 week in the fridge.

For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a freezer-safe container or plastic freezer bag for up to 4 months.

Can people eat these treats?

Yes! These banana pumpkin dog treats are made with all human-safe ingredients. They’re lightly sweet, wholesome, and a great option for anyone looking for a low-sugar snack. Give one a try and see what you think!

I’m in the process of making them and they are just a mushy mess. I did all the measurements correct. But they stick to the rolling pin, they stick inside my cookie cutter and I mean it’s terrible. Any tips for me? I did make my own oat flour out of rolled oats but that’s the only difference. Should I use more flour?

Yes, add more flour if the dough is too moist or sticky to roll out.

Use flour on your roller and cutters. Sprinkle some out flour over the top also before you roll it out. The size of the banana can make the dough more gooey.
